Has anyone changed one of the plastic speedo drives in a Type 9 5 sp without taking the gearbox out of the car?  was contemplating dropping the transfer case to change?

A transfer case is in 4x4s to send power to both the front and rear wheels, but if you do have one, you will probably have to drop it...

Anyway, you can get to it easily enough, regardless of which side it's on. On mine, it's on the drivers side because it's electrical. I didn't change the gear, but I did put on burton powers adapter and sender without even jacking up the car. :)

If you do need some extra room, which lets face it, extra room NEVER goes a stray, then you could just unbolt the transmission crossmember and lower it down, but I recommend you support it somehow. The engine mounts might be able to take it, but better safe than sorry. :)

Sorry Brenton I meant the extension housing. So the plastic gear can be accessed by dropping the extension housing or can it be changed by accessing it after taking the speedo cable out?? Circlip holding gear?? I notice there is an inspection hole on the passenger side of housing that has a press fit cover??? I thought maybe it can be changed through this cover????

Just changed over to T9, you need to remove the welsh plug on  the left hand side and the gear will pull straight out. After removing the speedo cable.  Probably just need to lower the back of the extension housing. I believe you need to put a 4 speed gear in to keep the speedo right.

Done mine in my mk1 (a few times as seal was playing up), can do it where it is use chisel or similar with mallet remove welsh plug nice and evenly, then (with speedo cable removed) push gear out. May be good time to change seal (easily removed with hook thingy tool), Always good to re-straighten flange at top of welsh plug, I put a little bit of gasket goo around it too.
