In that case get a few and change them according to the event.   You'll never be happy with the handling otherwise.

I have 275lb springs and drive it around a bit and don't find it too hard at all.  If it was a daily drive it's a different story though.

Sounds like a great project.  Get some pics up.

Cheers,

Note also if you have coil overs in the rear, you'll need different spring rates to that of standard leaf spring setup. Usually a higher rate. Agree on the different springs too if you have coil overs all round. 2.25" springs are cheap and relatively easy to change compared to standard springs.

What sort of weight would you recommend i start with evobda? Like you say i can get a few different weights and change them over but i want to get  midweight coils first so im not driving around on solid springs.
Cheers guys

I think its only a slight increase. So if you were running 150lb leaf springs you may go up to around 180lb for coil overs. I think once you get to this stage it might be worth talking to suspension guru's like Heasman here in Sydney, who have done grp4 escorts in the past. Also the UK guys have a lot of knowledge on these setups too. The Turbosport forum is a good place to look.

Perhaps maybe run a 190lb front & 160lb rear for road, and then for track try a 280lb front 180lb rear?
Im only guessing with the rear springs here as I've run leaf. Having 5 link etc is a whole new ball game.

I presume that by "rally" you are referring to tarmac rallying as off road rallying requires soft spring rates.
I have used 180lb coilovers on the front and 150lb coilovers on the rear of my Mk1 Escort. My experience has shown that this works very well when used with appropriate adjustable dampers such as adjustable Koni's (which I am using) MCA, Bilsteins, GAZ, DMS, etc etc. Whilst spring rates are very important, the same amount of consideration should be placed upon the dampers. Having the ability to control the rebound and compression of the damper will only enhance the springs performance.

Thanks Craig (from another craig lol)
I was thinking tarmac/dirt rally, so i`m making lot of notes and going to keep the info handy when i have to get springs. Theres really only motorkahna type rally here in Adelaide unless you want to pay a fortune for the Adelaide Classic.

I have 190lb springs in my mk2 2L with kings on the back. It's a road car but I use it for motorkhanas and have taken it to mallala on semi slicks.

To me, the springs are stiff enough for the street and the car handles well. The front of the car drops under brakes but not a considerable amount. Also if you are thinking of doing motorkhanas it isnt a bad thing for the front to drop as you hit the handbrake. I would however go harder if the car was predominantly used for the track, the springs are a tad too soft in my opinion when using a really good tyre on a racetrack.

I had`nt even thought of track work, but i spose if i get a little more engine work done it could be a lot of fun (dont you need a CAMS licence to run at Mallalla?)
