Is it possible to get this sort of clip off without completely wrecking it? Are they meant to come off?
I've got a new bonnet release lever that I want to get on, but that little clip is holding me back. Its on a mk1 Escort too.

If you're talking about the round washer style clip with 3 or 4 'tongues' pressing up against the round pin, then you can get them off without wrecking them. Just lever a small flat head screwdriver underneath (two small screwdrivers at the same time works well).

If you do break it, you can still buy them at most auto stores. Good luck
