Hi Guys,

I am just getting started on gathering info on building up my engine to handle a few tracks days and a bit of spirited driving.

I have been on Turbo Sport http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?165466-pete-a-2-2-197bhp-pinto&highlight=how+to+stroke+a+pinto and just wanted peoples opinion on getting the engine stroked to around 2.2 ltrs.

1.  Approx cost for getting the crank offset ground around 3mm

2.  Piston & Rod info or combinations would be great with rod lengths and piston size or even guys or shops to speak to source the parts.

The car won't be a daily driver so a few bad manners is OK but I like the idea of an engine that has more torque down low and that I won't have to rev its' nuts off to get it to go.

Any opions or experience is appreciated

Cheers

In the uk they use fiesta diesel rods with an offset ground crank to get 2.2 but finding the diesel rods in australia would probably be impossable so you would have to find a set in the uk

Using datsun L16 rods will do, you also need shorter pistons and i believe you can only grind the crank 2mm

Datsun rods eh?  I'll have a look around.

Do you know their length?

You can take up to 3mm depending on how worn thre crank is.

Matt,
In my opinion stroking the engine really isn't worth the expense.  You are far better of investing the extra money into the cylinder head/camshaft area and making it breath better.  The results are is most cases better.  The other thing you need to factor in is that if you stroke it, it puts you into the next class when racing which in most cases is 2000-3000cc.   There are really good off the shelf rods and pistons available for these engines now at a decent price, and if the engine is done right it will make its power well under 8,000rpm which means not revving the bags out of it.

If you really have you heart set on making it bigger in capacity, the simplest way to do it is to offset grind the crank as you suggested, and use the Datsun rods and a set of custom pistons.  I don't think you'll get it to 3mm offset.  In relation to cost offsetting the crank, I suggest to give Crankshaft rebuilders a call in Melb to give you an idea.

Thanks Woz,

I just trying to gather info at this stage so your repsonse is appreciated.

I was thinking that bang for buck it may be an option but doesn't sound like it.

As I would need to get new pistons & conrods anyway the only added expense as I see it would be the offset grinding.
I take your point about the change of racing class.

You also need to factor in that rods aren't off the shelf.  Even if you use Datsun rods they will need to be modified.  Same with pistons, although alternatives may be available (eg: out of another engine) chances are they'll need to be modified to fit in certain areas.

So you'll need to factor in
-offset grinding crank
-modifying and purchasing conrods
-possibly modifying pistons
-balancing.  Usually it will be extra in an engine like this.
