how far down from the top of the strut casing should I place the threaded sleeve?

All depends on required ride height and spring length.
Generally if the top of the sleeve is about 10 - 20mm from the top of tube you should be fine with 8" or 10" springs.

Mine are about 50mm down. This eliminates any chance of the heat from welding distorting the internal threads that hold the dtrut insert into the leg

Why would you weld the top?

no need to weld top of coilovers to strut tube.works cars didn't find a need for it

rule of thumb is for road or race car 8" long springs and rally 10" that way spring adjustment should be central.

i made some a while ago. pretty sure the top of the thread was 2 inches from the top of the tube with 10 inch springs.

I have done them too but i haven't put the motor back in to see where it sits yet.
Search around - this has been discussed before, even with pics.
