Hi all

I am still searching for a replacement gearbox for my 1970 V6 Capri.  I would like to get away from the original external linkage type but will consider anything.  Please contact me if you have anything I might be interested in.  Thanks

A mk2/mk3 Capri v6 Essex box is like a steroid pinto box and bolts up without any fuss, trouble is finding one here in Aust . Option #2 go a Celica 5sp

Option 3 : Supra 5spd conversion from Dellows, but you will need to fabricate a gbox cross member and tailshaft.

Cant find a decent mk2/3 capri box.

Dont wanna spend the money to rebuild the original box.

A Celica 5 speed box with Dellow conversion is a lot of money but I think I will have to make it happen. The capri has been out of action for about 6 months now

If anyone has done the Dellow Celica conversion can you give me some tips? Does the conversion require the floor to be cut for the shifter? ect

Thanks for the replys guys

I remember from one of my books, that I cant find right now, that either the mk2 or mk3 box had vent hole that allowed water in.

I dont know how much the Celica conversion will cost, and I have no idea if this box is any good but it seems cheap, and he's willing to post it

Try to steer away from the Toyota steel case box - its too weak to take the pain (off the shelf - hadfield used to juice them up by changing the lay shaft bearings etc). The supra turbo box is fine. There is no cutting to the tunnel if u get one with the right shift location. U will have to make a rear mount or use one out of - I forget the (ford) European car to look for - check them out on ebay for one that looks good. U can use a t5 - cheap, heaps of parts etc - but u will have to cut to the top face of the tunnel to accommodate the casting - - say 75 x 150mm -  the shift location is fine. U can use a standard gearbox mount out of a Granada 5 speed - they throw back and down. U just inset a plate into the mount to cater for the t5 mount. Use a later model single pin falcon mount for it (limits vibration transfer) . Also the speedo location for the t5 is a hassle - u can bore a hole in the tunnel to feed the cable directly into the passenger compartment (use standard capri grommet to seal)  but cheap, tough, nice shifters available ....

Re T5 path, there are many variations available around the globe, so check your target ratios carefully.

One from a 6cyl Falcon is probably a good chioice - I'm thinking power/torque and weight of vehicle for the included ratios  to suit a lightweight Capri.(but I have no info on this, merely surmising a relevant choice).

Many many moons ago ('70s), the Falcon had a 3.23 diff, which is comparable to the Capri 3.22 (or 3.09 if you're real fortunate). So a gearbox designed for a 3.23 diff should work fine with the 3.22 for driveability.

Even the Supra boxes had three different ratio sets. The one with the steel plate in the middle (model W58 IIRC) is the one to get (or so I'm told).  The steel plate stops flexing of the casing. Dellows website has all the details.

Just my 5.5c worth.... (GST incl.)

Thanks for all the opinions.

Seems like everyone has a different opinion as to the best way to go.

I have been in contact with a bloke who has a MK2/3 type 5 box for sale.

A lot less mucking around with clutches and speedo cables and mounts and tailshaft ect ect so its the way im leaning towards.

I will let you all know how it pans out.

Right now I just wanna get my car back on the road.......

Just make sure you get the bellhousing with it, as the early MK3 2.8is ran that 4 speed box and the bellhousing (and input shaft) are different.  You can swap the input shaft from the side link box, but the bellhousing casting makes re-drilling not possible

I could have a Toyota 5 speed coming with a package of parts I'm trying to buy.  I'll see what box it is and let you know cheers JR
