Hi all - I am nearing the paint stage (original Blaze Blue) of my '72 GT V6.  Can anyone confirm the type of black paint for the bonnet bulge/stripes, rear tail light panel and the sills (matte/gloss/satin?).  I remember the rear panel was shinier than the bonnet. Are the sills the same paint as the rear panel.  Anyone have paint codes?

Cheers, Don

Hi Don,

crickets for your responses so far.
I had a 71 GT V6 capri for a while, that had the blackouts.
Both were true matt black, but given the car was 30+ years old already, they general paint quality was pretty degraded by then. I ended up fitting the bonnet to my 16oo, and sandign through the blackouts was fun, it wasnt paint anymore, totally baked hard.

If it was me, I'd be doing satin, only because I like things shiny and I think its easier to keep satin clean. With Matt black, if you get any polish on it, its noticeable straight away and IMHO it only looks good for 10 minutes after spraying. You might lose some concourse points, but much more liveable.
Time to update us with some pics?

Many people seem to go gloss for convenience and longevity, but I’d go satin over matt for the bonnet.

Don, here's a few pics of the blackouts again Blaze Blue paint. Black is definitely satin originally with the bonnet being a little less glossy than the sills and rear panel from memory. I paint matched my black paint with another correct looking car with paint chips to match the gloss level. The shape of bonnet black is the other thing to watch. Hope the paint process goes smoothly for you. Shout out if you need any help with the Blaze Blue paint matching. cheers

Thanks for that (and the motivation..)  I was checking the forum as I seem to recall there was a post a few years back about the different finishes between the rear tail light panel and the bonnet.  I couldn't find it so I threw the query on. I must admit I am a fan of the Satin finish.  I was toying with the idea of using a vinyl wrap for the blackouts but have seen a couple of Falcons done that way and have decided that paint is definitely best.

My first Capri in the 80s had matte black on the bonnet but the whole car had undergone a colour change before I acquired it. I used to Armor All the blackouts as the finish was crap. I'm not too worried about concourse. I've added a second (right side) exhaust notch with an eyebrow above each port and will be going with the smaller (UK) style faux vents on the sides and the sculpted rear seat with centre armrest.  15 inch gold Simmons V4 rims to match the side stripes. Picking out what I personally think to be the best features of the Mk1...

great combo Don on all counts.
If you have a white interior, thats 9.9 out of 10 for me.

Funny how you can get drawn toward a particular wheel.
Mine is the minilight look, specifically the Compomotive ML versions.
Everytime I look at the order page for my next set of wheels, it gold that I want to select.

You have to keep us posted now, especially since you are at the fun bit.

I have been thinking of this as well. Thanks for all the input guys and saving me a new post in the coming months.

My original paint seemed to be a matte, but I thought it may have been faded over time.

I think I will stick with satin for the bonnet and all the bits.

Thanks everyone for the input - Trailered pics below are of her finally heading back to my body/paint guy a few weeks ago.  Life and all those issues meant there has been a 5 year break between starting the bodywork and heading back for completion..  The other shot is of some of his handy work with the exhaust notches.  The left side exhaust port has been moved out slightly to be symmetrical with the right side, which has to accommodate the spare wheel well. She's from Jan '72 and I acquired from the original owner. Matching numbers V6 with a motor that had never been bored out (currently being 'freshened' with upgraded cam and D port heads). The bad side apart from the usual rust problems was that she had run up the back of someone and a home repair was done.  She is now essentially brand new from the firewall forward.
