About to reassemble my rack and asking what lubricant is used. I'm assuming oil is specified by the OEM but I'm hearing grease is also used.
What's the recommended practice and what grades of lubricant?

I greased the pinion and used oil as recommended many years ago when I rebuilt my rack. When I have needed to replace rack boots I top up with oil.
 

Timely question Paul, as I have a leaky rack to repair. Can you recommend a source of spare parts?

The correct oil guys, for Rack & Pinion St Box is  EP80w/90 (Hypoid) as commonly used in all Capri Differentials.
Even EP90w/140 is acceptable on an old Rack, if EP80w/90 is not to hand. This may be too heavy for a NEW or fully reco rack.
Gear Oil 75w/80 is also acceptable
 

Flighter, I have ordered through Rally Design as cheapest and had what I needed as apart from rack boots mine is fine. Quality of the parts looked ok but won't know till it lands I guess plus purchased the non genuine "green" rod ends so will see what they're like. Motorsporttools sells various rebuild kits but were more $$ for the items I needed. Postage varies greatly too.

Thanks Paul - I'll look into the UK, although not Rally Design after they bent me over backwards and raped me on freight last time (unless they've changed their policy since then). UPDATE - they haven't.

It's like a lucky dip re freight!! I think Burtons is the one stop shop but a little rich depending on what you're ordering. Motorsporttools and Ralloy appear reasonable but depends on what you're after.

Bloody Hell!
Parts finally arrived but the boots are too small and don't fit over the rack! Looking again RD sell a boot to suit the HD rack which has a 25mm rack shaft and specified as Heavy Duty. Is there a difference in the Aussie racks or did we only have the "HD" ones?
 
 

I'm using Firstline FSG3033 boots on my racks.  They fit over everything, but stretch a bit when at full lock. The Burton boots are generic junk, whereas the Firstline's look like they match the Ford ones.
