Hi BV, it sounds to me that the gearbox is not too bad. Considering that it has the later 2nd gear ratio its well worth fixing. And considering that its part of a uprated drivetrain that Australia ford fitted and can be verified. I got mine refreshed and am very happy with it. I frequently pull about 70 in 2nd gear.
Yesterford have small parts kits for the v6.
You may be able to save some dough by finding a good v6 box and just swapping your 2nd gear cog and layshaft cluster over to it, or mix and match as required.
As far as the shifter is concerned grab a good one as soon as you find it, i think mk3 cortina sixs used the same housing.
Motomobil have the bushes and spring steel clips to connect the linkage rods. The rods can  be repaired.
Have patience and detail the whole thing from gearknob to syncro hub fork, and you will be happy as Bernie, guaranteed. Time for a chardy,...ron.

Change your oil, you need 80 weight in it.  Shifters need SOME slop I have a lot of shifter parts and there is a procedure for refitting the shifter in your workshop manual - locking the levers when you attach the levers to the rods

Capri parts book dated 11/73 only lists one part number each for cluster and second gear so I don't think that changed second gear ratio was fitted to any Australian Capri.
TC Cortinas ordered with 2 litre motor and bench seat were fitted with essentially the same gearbox as V6 Capri.
Until 3/72 the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and cluster gears shared the same part numbers as the V6 Capri boxes.
From 3/72 2nd gear and cluster are different part numbers so I guess that would be the different ratio mentioned in " The Sporting Fords Volume 3 - Capris ".

Hi Phil, thanks for posting that info re similar parts of tc cortina linkage box. This is handy knowledge when looking for good second hand bits.
yes , ford australia did indeed put these uprated boxs in some cars. Here is a copy of the ford special parts bulletin which shows the second gear ratio. Together with the 3.09 diff it makes second gear very useful.

Uprated and different parts to standard hence the need for the yellow stickers.

Thanks a mil' for all your "Pearls of Wisdom" Guys............no such thing as "too much info" when it comes to cars....... I lap it all up like the other "favourite" most girl-lovers do!
Can't wait to see how she runs with the 80 weight oil Ron, together with well-adjusted valves as I haven't checked them since re-installing the re-built engine i finally finished several months ago. There wasn't much incentive as it just drives like a V12 on Eastlink Freeway test to "SNL"at BP Servo on Sat 17.12.16. It's all true what they laud about the famous Essex V6; I was very impressed with its engineered design when I had it in pieces last year during the overhaul. I wonder if it was German borne ? I've seen enough poor English engineering in my lifetime to hesitate when I first considered my Capri 4 years ago! Wasn't helped from years of working on clients' Morris Nomads, Morris Cooper S's, Leyland Marina 4 &6 and P76 V8's, etc. Cannot recall any nightmares from all the Fords like Prefect 100E or Wolseley 15/60 I worked on and still own.
One item which seems to stick in my mind with the Essex design is the Valve Design and V stem oil seals. My old valves had their fair share of wear and the V stem oil seals may as well not have been there as they were all cracked and very loose held in place solely by gravity!
Yet the Essex did not burn any undue amounts of any oil at any speed, as per spec ! Not many engine designs could claim this asset !
So with in spec VS Clearances and new seals, I can look forward to decades of zero oil consumption, esp as I believe new oil and filter is mandatory and dirt cheap insurance EVERY 5,000kms. Even cheaper now as basic Min Oils 20/50 GTX from Castrol are at giveaway prices as the new cars engineers go mad with their $10-$30 x litre semi and full synthetic oils. I just purch a 205 L drum of Castrol for $500 inc tax! ......that's less than $2.50 xL !

Happy New Year to all !
