hi dear all
thank you for accepting me to your great forum. I am from sri lanka and recently brought a 1977 ford escort mk 2. it is a great car but needs little attention. engine and transmission in good shape but the carb is giving me pains. someone has chopped off the engine mounted fuel pump and fixed an electric pump. the car has poor ideling at times and the plugs running black. changes to NGK BP5ES from BP6ES still the problem is there. I have changed the ignition coil, new points  & condenser, HT leads & jets on the carb but still cannot get a decent tick over as a misfire can be felt.

your expert advice is much appreciated and thanking you in advance.

Carbs only require a low pressure fuel pump as they need only 3-4 PSI. Check to see that its not a high pressure one as it will be overwhelmed. Also has the carby had a good clean and a new kit? Doesn't take much dirt for a carb to run bad. Pls also ensure that it has a clean inline filter to reduce the chance of getting dirty fuel. Don't know what parts availability is like in Sri Lanka but carby kits and filters can be bought on line without too much drama.
Cheers and welcome to the forum. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on the forum and we all love to help, don't think any question is too silly to ask!
