Don't understand the " the mirror spring loaded back towards the car " part. The mirror control is held in place in the door trim by a locking bezel ( chrome ring ). if the bezel has come off then the lever will fall back inside the door due to the tension on the spring cables inside. If the pivot is not held in place then the mirror wont respond to movement of the lever if it is hanging loose.   The base of the glass is held in place in the mirror housing by a screw underneath. The cables end in ball pivots in the back of the mirror itself which change the angles of the mirror when you move the remote lever. All the pivots should be lubed for easy action. If the mirror is not responding to the movements of the lever then something has come adrift- there are 3 cables to move the mirror in the vertical and horizontal planes- up /down and left/ right so you will have to take off the trim to see what is going on.
