Gday all, first up I'm not much of a mechanic so I'll try my best in explaining my problem. Ive got hold of a '76 Escort 1.6l 4 speed and have been slowly getting some work done on it for my sons first car. Anyway, the gear stick actually came out of the gearbox while we were driving it. There should be a kind of split ball on the bottom of the gear stick that holds it into the gear box by a large kind of plastic nut, well this plastic split ball thing has disintegrated so it doesnt stay in. I can take a few photos if it helps but I was wondering what this part is called and where I could possibly get one? Thanks in advance, Haydn

Thanks but couldnt find one. To me it looks like I have to buy the complete stick not just the plastic part, cheapest I can see on ebay is about $140 out of England

Same thing happened to me on the morning of a race a month ago. You'll need a whole new gear lever. Someone will have a 2nd hand one somewhere or you can go new for around $150.

Cheers

Matt

Go the quick shift with the metal joint.  I recently had the same experience at an event and subsequently found that its becoming a pretty common occurrence as the plastic ages.  Luckily the replacement (thanks Nick..)  is holding together well.
