Hey guys, as I had my rear drums off the other day, I noticed that diff oil has been (slowly) leaking past out of the rear axle - from the wheel bearing retaining plate (ie the wheel bearing).

After having a look in Gregory's greasy pages, I see there is no seperate seal here - the bearing acts as a seal

The **** thing is, only a few years ago (and the car has been garaged for the majority of those), I had the wheel bearings replaced as they were noisy as all hell. A family friend charged the living daylights out of me after I pulled out the axles and had him press on new bearings.

Before I go off to get this done again (somewhere else), has anyone experienced this before? Could it be something else than a shot bearing? Like a worn axle shaft, or warped bearing retainer plate?

With thanks

Nick

Hey Mate,

The bearings themselves have a rubber seal around the outside to supposedly stop this very thing from happening.

Hiw effective it is I am not sure, but it is quite easy to damage it and shear it off when installing the axles back in the housing.

If thr car hasn't seen much road time then things like this can leak due to lack of use.

Cheers,

Matt

fair call Matt. As usual im about to pick up soem stuff from my local part store later on, so I've quizzed them about wheel bearings and they only have a bearing with integral seal listed for scorts from 1970-1975 (mk1). Part number is F206A. Does anyone know if the bearings are the same for the mk2? Or can anyone give me the mk2 part number?

Cheers

Yes, and the guy Rhys who runs it gives very good service too.

I had a few issues with some alloy hub grease caps and he just replaced them for free inc postage.

Cheers

Nick,

In regards to your original post, one new kit I bought leaked thru' the bearing seal from day one. It was a Japanese FBJ bearing.
The next kit was German & had a KFB 411546R bearing. It hasn't leaked a drop in a few years of supersprints.
Both kits were 2742.

Does anyone know where to source the kits containing the KFB bearing? All local suppliers have either a no name brand or the FBJ.
It's an old thread but has anyone used the FBJ kit with any success recently?
