I've been looking at why my carb air filter goes quite close to the underside of the bonnet (it only misses by about 5-10mm), and I wondered if maybe the previous owner had fitted the 'wrong' engine mounts.  I think I need a bit more room for fitting a Weber 32/36DGV with the spacer/adaptor to the single barrel inlet manifold.  Also, the mounts look a little dodgy:


Are these dodgy/the right mounts for fitting a 1600 into a Mk1 van?  Is it possible to get different mounts for lowering the block a little?

looking at it I'd say the 1600 is 681 or 691 block out of a cortina which is 1/2" narrower than 711M and the reason the mounts are bottoming out in the crossmember.
 
The problem can be fixed by going to the later round engine mounts and block brackets, you may need spacers though.

Thanks for that info - yes, it's a 681F block from a Mk2 Cortina (judging by the engine number - 681F6015JA) - is a 681 from a Cortina different to a 681 from an Escort?  From what I've found about engine and chassis numbers the van used to have a 1300 engine in it.

That's the problem, the block width.
 
I can help you out with block brackets, mounts and spacers. The round escort engine mounts are cheaper and easier to come by than the Mk2 cortina/early escort ones anyway.

Please excuse my ignorance, but to change these over would it be just a case of bolting the right ones on, no change required to the crossmember?
The other thing - is this going to lower the engine a little to gain a bit more clearance for the carb air filter?  I suppose that's going to depend on whether there's enough room to drop the engine and not hit the crossmember or steering arms....

I've got a spare 32/36 manifold for a 1600 if you're interested. Its off a 75 ghia xflow.

No worries - but if they're going to raise the engine even a bit the air cleaner will hit the bonnet (if I rev the engine hard at the moment it must hit - there's a few paint marks in the 'right' spot).  So I might pass if that's okay.
I had a better look at the situation on the weekend and the sump appears to be only missing the crossmember by a tiny margin at the moment, so it looks like I'm stuck with the mounts and clearances I have at the moment.  I hope to gain 10mm when I bolt the new air cleaner for the Weber on.
