Hi All,

Im re-living my youth - Way back then I had an 1980 Red 2DR RS2000 that I have always regretted selling. Ive just bought a white 2 door, and a YB to transplant into it.

I am chasing some basic startup information...

- Front Crossmember - World Cup or Standard ? I think both need to be modified ?
- YB block is the same as a Pinto ? thereore Pinto Engine mounted will bolt up to YB ? Y/N ?
- Gearbox - Whats the strongest Box that will fit with the least mods ?
- Would Like to know if anyone has 16's all around on there MK2 and i there are any scrapage issues ?
- What would I be able to sell my 2l Pinto for ?

Um...thats all for now..Im sure I'll think of more later, but the first 3 Questions are the main ones for me at tis stage ...

I look forward to your replies. Any info - even if it is unrelated to my questions would be welcomed !

Thanks

Hi Wozza,

You dont need to change the crosssmember - the YB block is just a pinto after all - but if you are going to use the YB sump then you'll need to modify it to clear the crossmember wether you use std or world cup.

In a flat-front Mk2, intercooler and radiator space can be an issue, but you just need to get creative. In an RS, you can sort of hide the intercooler behind the nosecone, but you wont get great airflow.

T5 gbox is probably the go as others have mentioned. There is a bit of stuffing around to put a 4 or 5 spd (t9) behind a YB in any case - you need to use a custom flywheel (9 bolt but pinto diameter - Burtons do one I think) - so probably not worth the hassle since the T5 is a bit stronger.

I am working through this conversion at the moment and in Perth, so happy to chat if you are coming "up north" :)

I also have a Yb mk2 escort project on the go. Easiest way is world cup cross member with the rear lip trimmed and then re weld the edge of it to retain its strength. No sump mods required. As for intercooler/radiator I bought a Proalloy Kit from the UK, not cheap but excellent quality and fits using standard cosworth silicon hoses. My intention is to use as much standard off the shelf cosworth items as possible. Makes life alot easier. I also just had a complete brand new loom made and sent out from the UK just to use the original ECU.

Hi Kizza,

Interesting that you say only a slight trim of the crossmember is required to use the std sump. Is a WC crossmember a completely different profile? I though they just had different engine mounts?

Pretty sure your right in saying they are tge same just different mounts. I have trimmed the majority of the rear lip in the offending area off and it clears enough. Just make sure you weld the seam back up as you lose a heap of strength by removing the lip. Cheers

Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I know that I have to trim the crossmember whichever way I go, but what i dont really understand is this.... I keep seeing reference to crossmembers to suit YB or Pinto...apparently different mounts ?. Why is this ?...the YB is essentially a pinto, so surely you would simply use the pinto brackets  and bolt them to the YB, and it goes straight in ? So if I get a WC crossmember, which mount should I go for ?

I know Burtons is the go for Cossie parts, but is there anyone in Oz that sells stuff for YB's ?

T5 Gearbox....What is availablilty like here in OZ, and how much do they usually go for ?

When fitting the T5, it obviously bolts straight to the YB, but what mods (if any) are involved at the rear gearbox crossmember ?

Cheers

Guys,

Also, Im new to this sitre, and it seems that for some strange reaosn you need to 'prove yourself worthy' to simply contact a member !

I am trying to contact user "Mark' who owns the Dark Blue RS with the cossie in it...I basically want to ask him about his wheels....Mark if you read this, or if anyone else knows him, can you get him to contact me please...Would love to have a chat !

Cheers

I used pinto world cup mounts for mine. As for proving yourself I highly doubt thats the case. 99% of the people on here will help eachother out in some way or another. I have never met or had and contact with Mark but I have read/witnessed him help others on here. His more then likely busy mate.
