Hello All,

Am trying to get back into my long-term (forever!) project.

Would like some advice and thoughts on whether to go down the steel or aluminium timing gear option?

Have read various articles and they all say that up-grading is a must, so really looking at whether Steel or Aluminium is better, and a source.

Regards,

Darian.

I put an alloy gear in mine...big mistake.

The first one I received had casting faults in a couple of teeth, so I sent it back and they sent me a new one that looked ok but I was always unsure if there were defects I couldnt see.  I put it in and the noise made the car emabarrasing and annoying to drive.  Hoping it would get quieter I stuck with it but it still stayed too noisy.  The hotter it got the thinner the oil got and the louder the noise got.

End result I put my nylon gear back in and it's the best thing I have done.  Unless you have huge lift on your cam or heavy springs the nylon should be fine.

But if you want to go metal then my vote would be steel.  My ute has steel and they are much quieter than my capri alloy and steel will never fatigue, alloy will always eventually fatigue.

Hi Darian,

Long time between posts. As GTV6 has said, this is probably the best timing gear to have, but they aren't available new any more (apart from ebay UK).

Cheers
Jamie

They come up, I got one last week for my might need it in 20 years collection for 13 pounds, all up Aud $50 delivered.  But you have to go to the uk site and when they say local postage only just ask them if they will post to Aus.  Most say yes.

Many Thanks Gentlemen.

GTV6 - Appreciate the comments.  I was leaning towards steel but I thought I read somewhere that the Aluminium was quieter, but must admit I have no experience with either and fully appreciate the point re "fatigue".

Coswothfreak (G'day Jamie) - Yes, way too long between posts - had all sorts of trouble remembering on which forum and what passwords!!  Seems to be a little more active on here. Since we last caught up - surprise, surprise - I've done virtually nothing.  In the last few weeks around Adelaide, I've seen a couple of really nice Capri's. One Yellow-ish V6 Capri that seemed very straight and original and the other one more modified. Both very nice but I didn't have a chance to get a closer look at either of them - just passing in traffic.

Having said that, the bloke I got my heads from (can I say that!!) was running a fibre timing gear, but just floating around reading it seems that there is a general feeling that the timing gear should be changed.  I would hate it if I didn't spend the extra couple of hundred dollars in the short term only to spend a couple of thousand (and the rest probably) at a later stage. Just trying to get myself sorted and grab a few more parts ready for the day. On the other hand, if Fibre is okay, then I'm happy to use that.  The engine as it is at the moment (and as I got it) has the fibre gear and I used to run it fairly hard!!

I have attached a few pictures of the Heads and the Cam Spec Sheet - Okay so - the heads have double valve springs and oversized valves. Cam is a Waggott, Profile 212D/2, Lift is 278.00 thou (would be easier to post the spec Sheet!) - so would steel be a wise investment even though these heads and cam was using a fibre gear before?

Please, all comments and advice greatly appreciated.

With Thanks,

Regards,
Darian.
