Anyone used an Odyssey battery in their pinto powered car? I've killed so many regular lead acid batteries over the years from lack of use that I'm tempted to try something of higher quality. The bonus with the Odyssey is that I could probably get away with something smaller, which, seeing I'm still using the standard battery tray, would mean I could save a little weight over the front corner of the car. Some of the UK guys run the PC680 (only 5.6kg), which is evidently enough to start the car but doesn't have much reserve capacity. The electrical load on my car is tiny when in operation, and non-existent when parked, which is the vast majority of the time. Regardless of what I get next, I do have a proper battery charger to keep it in shape, so hopefully I won't be killing any more batteries any time soon.

I have one in my 200sx S15.  I've had 2 in 12 years so they are pretty good.
 
You need a proper trickle charger as the disuse is what is killing your batteries and not the quality.

Yeah, I finally got with the program, and bought a smart charger for when I eventually install a battery (the car has been a work in progress for the past few years). The problem these days is finding the smaller lead acid battery (to save 4-5 kilos as well as a few $). I've got a near dead N43 sitting around now, which is the same length as the larger ones, but is 3 or 4 cms narrower, so there's still some space either side of the battery tray. I've always found them perfectly fine for cranking duties. Century still make one, but it's pretty much the bottom of their line.

I have 2x dry cell batteries, 1 from that Full River guy which is now 8yrs old and only a 280cca , this is in my mk1 zetec and spins it over good (I've got a stock pinto starter in it, the other is a Optima D34 with 400cca for my mk1 van. . Also with a zetec (not quite running yet), but I've used the battery to crank my brothers F250 turbo diesel no probs , same with a mates 351c F350 .
I disconnect the batteries when not in use and hold charge well for months

Check out deka batteries. Same as odesy and braille without the brand or price tag. R&j batteries sell them

Had my little Full River for 4 years and has never missed a beat.  Doesn't hold many hampsters so can run flat easily with continued starting attempts.  I use a smart charger always.
