Seems a waste not to use your Hi energy sump. Usual method is to temporarily fit longer cross member bolts and loosen the UJ on the steering shaft. While suspending the engine you can then lower the cross member which allows the sump to clear on engine removal. Also lowering the complete engine cross member this way and tilting engine backwards allows gearbox removal. Works for me with alloy sump & 4 speed in one car and HE sump & T9 in other. Both cars with manual tunnels and can do on my own.

SFE,

Do you need to disconnect steering knuckle to lower cross member enough to clear?

Thanks,
Rhys

Could be, W55-W56-W57-W58, ... Can't tell without stripping them, all are 190hp except W58, 230hp.
W58's ... i read they have been pushing 500HP V8's, it's got my vote for the most over engineered Box ever.!!

While we're talking Toyota gearboxes, this is one I've got in the shed. Came with the orange mk1 I got ages ago and the guy said it was a Celica 5-sp. From looking at the interwebs it looks like a W58 Supra one, not a Celica. Any ideas? Its a bulky thing, surely no chance of fitting in a manual tunnel.

Hey guys do all the "W" series boxes have the same stud pattern where it bolts to the bell housing? regardless if its a Celica or supra.

No, The W50 is different from the later ones I.e. W55, W57 and so on.

The W50 is 6 bolts whereas the later ones are 8, I believe

I am about to put a W50 in my MK2 if I get around to it.

  • W series gearboxes have a separate bellhousing.
  • Different bellhousings are used to connect a W50 gearbox to an R or M series engine.
  • Different bellhousings are used to connect a W55 gearbox to an R or T series engine.
  • Alloy W5# gearboxes are interchangeable with each other.
  • Alloy and steel W5# gearboxes are NOT interchangeable with each other.
  • W50 bellhousings do not fit the W55 gearbox and vice versa.
  • W55 bellhousings do fit the W56, W57 and W58 gearboxes and vice versa.
  • All W## gearboxes after 1970 had the same output spline as the A## automatic gearboxes.
  •
I have a W58 PDf  Manual, PM me if interested with your Email, and I will shoot you a copy.!!
