Hi all im tossing up whether to install a hydraulic handbrake to my mk2 as today in a motorkhana the rears hardly locked at all. As it is a road car i want to keep the standard one too.

Has anybody installed one and kept the standard one?

I dont know much about these things so any info would help.
My biggest issues would be whether it is legal to have one in SA and also how much room i would need for it as I have a console fitted.

Pictures would be great

Cheers,
Ryan

Ryan now you're on that borderline that you want to keep it as a daily but you need to modify to suit how its being used on the weekends.

Its a slippery slope!
You're going to have to chose which one you use for road and which is track? 2dr road, 4dr track?

How did motorkhana go other than handbrake?

Mish
ahh yeah we have all been there haven't we rhys.

as far as the hyrdo goes it is all fairly straight forward plumbing wise, just re rout the rear brake circuit into the car and have it pass throught the new handbrake master cylinder, but im not sure how you will go mounting one along with the std handbrake. not a heap of room on an escort tunnel. and if you do find somewhere be sure to plate the other side of the tunnel so you dont tear it out of the floor.

I am interested in this too.  I've just bought one similar to below and wanted to see pics of how others have mounted theirs.  Not fussed about whether I keep the standard h/brake or not.

Mish, how'd you mount yours?

Cheers,

Matt

Mish
mine is mounted using the std mounting holes for the handbrake, but i run mine on an slight angle back towards myself so that i am pulling the leaver towards myself not on some funky angle, it makes it easier and less straining to use.

since the photo i have increased the angle further towards the driver.

Yea Rhys its hard I love it being my daily but Im probably going to have to pick one haha. Im leaning towards just doing it as Id get picked up on a few other things before that such as no emissions gear and too low, and i could take the lever off on the road so I could argue that pretty well I wouldve thought.

Motorkhana went well thanks, tonnes of fun. Need to use my road tyres on the back next time, didnt have enough traction on the concrete. Next one is on the 30th March at Monarto again, hopefully see you out there!

Thanks Mish, i did look in my car and go oh dear where could i put it. Getting an engineer to pass it wouldnt be the hard bit i wouldnt have thought (got told today that it would need engineering to be legal as it is a modification of the standard hydraulic circuit) but as you said where to put it if i wanted to keep the standard one.

How long and wide are yours Mish and Matt? As in from the front of it to the back of the master cylinder. If i know the dimensions I can figure out whether itll fit in there or not.

Thanks guys
