Hi guys doing a mk2 escort/zetec conversion (Blacktop) just a few little questions.
 
I'm using an alloy bellhousing for a Type 9 and was wondering what sandwitch plate people have used? the bottom half doesnt fit now because the starter motor is now there instead of up the top, will a pinto one fit??????
 
Do you just plug the dipstick hole up in the side of the block because the retro ford sump now has a dipstick tube?
 
What ignition are you guys using? ive been looking at the triggerwheels site, just after feedback of what people are using and pro's and con's???????

I'm using a Silvertop with a Dellow housing for a Celice box.
Irrespective of the box I would have thought the starter would have been in the same location?
You can use the Pinto starter I think but you need to shift the ring gear.
I have a Raceline flywheel made especially for the RWD Zetec using the Pinto starter - it also incorperates the factory 36-1 trigger on the flywheel.
You going EFI or carbs and elect ignition?

The starter from the original FWD box looks like it was up the top of the bell housing, the bell housing I'm using now its down the bottom. I'm using R1 bike carbs.

You shuld be able to mount the starter onto the type 9 bellhousing - just depends on what starter you use. As I said you may need the ring gear moved to suit.
I doubt you can use the original Zetec starter....but others may know more.

Is the type 9 alloy housing starter motor  position the same as the escort, that is starter in lower left side?
If so there are 3 options;
A. space pinto starter out 13mm. (I have not done this myself but others on here have and it works, not sure about engine mount clearences)
B. machine the zetec ring gear stop 13mm further forward to run std escort starter. ( I have done this on my sons silvertop and it works).
C. Get hold of a starter from Granada/Sierra 16v auto, I have a MK1 with this starter on Blacktop. No mods, just bolts on. I dont think they are available in Oz but can get one from www.woodsauto.com in the UK, part No STR 2009 or STR 2048.
If you are going to cruise on sunday, I will be in the MK1 and you can have a look at starter, this car also  runs trigger wheels megajolt ignition kit and ninja 600 bike carbys.

The starter and flywheel are ok was really just wondering about what sandwich plate you use so the bottom of the bellhousing isn't left open. Are you happy with the trigger wheels ignition was it simple?

kit was great, clear diagrams, plenty of wire and colours, all pins and connectors, easy fit.
Re plate;
Just use a pice of tin, cut to size u need and use any bolt holes on housing.
I just left mine open, additional clutch cooling. LOL.

What about the dipstick hole? did you just put a plug in the old hole?
 

Oh sorry forgot about dipstick, yeh just plug it and use retro one.

Yeah what they said, I added a plate to an old pinto sandwhich plate to cover up the zetec starter hole and had to cut it out around the crank trigger sensor and sump for clearance, also used a welsh plug bashed into the original dipstick hole with some sealant for extra security.
I posted most of what I did on this sight, (conversions?) it could be helpful, I also use the megajolt system with 45 mm carbs, with a map sensor. Pretty solid ignition solution in my view.
RF sumps can be a pig, Clearance wise getting it into the car over the crossmember, I have to drop my crossmember to get donk in and out with gearbox on. Its also tight if using the standard escort starter, I had to massage the sump. Also the starter I had fouled on the flywheel  (I moved the ring gear) and ended up trimming the starter for clearance :0
