there is a few types of volvo conversions you can do, that looks like the single overhead, they have a twin cam, almost same size as a sr20 and looks just like too because of redtop, and I think the twin cam b230ft is the one ppl want but u have to do some serious cutting.

3sc0rt, if the idea behind the conversion is for a modern, EFI, turbo, powerful, reliable engine... then the CA18DET would be the winner. Much easier and cheaper, and it is readily available compared to most other engines mentioned in this thread.

Compared to a SR20DET, where most people space the x-member down or modify the rack position, both which are not good for steering geometry, the CA18 sump can be easily modified so the steering position remains factory. SR20 upper sump can also be modded, but is much harder.

In your case, you cannot beat the CA18DET. Period.

ive just had an sr20 fitted into my escort
had custom mounts made up im using vl turbo rubbers so i dont need to pay $450 for sr 1's
didn't need to touch the steering colum or space cross member sump fits perfectly in between sway bar and steering rack im going to be running a winged baffled sump.
jus need a decent fabricator that no's wat he is doing... u pay for wat u get...

if you want an easy and cheap conversion then go sr, my mk1 is currently in the middle of an fj conversion been a bit of a piss around x-member has had to be dropped 35mm, steerin rack has had to be moved over 3inch and modify the pickup with a custome sump thats had 13hrs spent on making it.

but everythin comes down to personal choice

In terms of power and potential diffrences of the CA18DET and SR20DET-

WHich SR20 are we talking about here? Redtop or VCT Blacktop?
If anyone can score a VCT Blacktop out of a S14 or S15 then your laughing as these things make power lower and more of it easier.
My S14 Silvia\200sx had the standard Blascktop SR20DET in it. Standard T28 Turbo on 13psi with exhaust, intercooler, splitfire ignition, CAI. ANd thats about it, made 180+ RWKW.

If anyone wants help, INFO, or any pics etc of SR20's or CA18's let me know.

SR20's are a great engine to do few mods to and get great response and power from. A great engine.
Ive had CA18's as well and i can tell yhou i love them also :) but diffrent kind of engine...
They aren't as good on fuel economy, low end torque isnt quite like the SR20, Reliability however is outstanding, mine went forever and is still going to this day.

Anyway, getting to long now.
THANKS GUYS,

the redtop/blacktop debate is kind of void, since as soon as you put a set of stage one cams in they are basicly the same engine. however the late model blacktop (the one with VCT, yes, there are black tops without VCT, i have one for my escort) is a little bit taller than the early blacktop/redtop, so personally id choose this one to make fitting easier. and with tomei, HKS, and and most other companies making drop in cams for an SR20 its kind of silly to not put some in. however if you plan on using standard turbo go the late black top, (t28) over the t25 of the red top.

From memory the difference between red and black top S13 SR20 are the pistons. I have stripped both and that was the only obvious difference I found. Early model NA inlet cams have .5mm higher lift.

definately not the fj20 they are a pretty heavy engine..

i wouldn't go the volvo route either, if you're going to the trouble of a difficult engine conversion you should go for a twincam.

Honda F20C or F22C
Nissan CA18 or SR20
Toyota 4AGE or 3SGE
Mazda BP/B6 or 13B
Ford Zetec or Duratec
Cossie YB or BDA
YAMAHA R1
SUZUKI Hayabusa

or if money is not an issue go with the H1V8 Made from two hayabusa engines.
