The Other Half
Well I've had a bit of time at the start of this year and decided to do some more things which I've always wanted done. Namely fixing all the small annoying things that the previous owner did half arsed like the electrics, fuel plumbing, rear battery operation, and a few other minor things.

I've completely re-wired the entire car modifying a 1.6L loom so I kept my old but tired RS one in tact. It has taken me 5 months and many cuts bruises and a severe soldering iron burn to the bottom of the foot to get (almost) there. [:u] [:o)]

My aim was to have just one wiring loom to run through-out the car and a sweet tidy looking engine bay. I've wired in an alarm that operates everything and I've used brand new terminals and proper soldering and heatshrink through-out. I've hidden the multitude of relays in one long block all together so that everything looks like it would be factory.

I've tidyied the routing of many wires, for example the fuel pump, battery cables (now running inside the car from the right rear over the wheel arch into beneath the rear seat then running along the left side and out through a hole which I found a custom oval rubber grommet for) and everything through-out the engine bay (lights now run out from in front of radiator)

I just got some Diahatsu Sirion rubber boots today to neatly route all the electric cables into the door through the frame so it looks factory.

Having tried FOR YEARS [}:)] to get new repro door cards I bought some english ones off my mate Rolly Waters at Racetune and I'm going to use these. They're mint.

The previous owner cut two holes in the stock door cards for some speakers. I didn't want to cut into the new door cards so I've got just one Clarion speaker operating in the middle through the air vent. Works quite well. My reasoning is that the car isn't for a sound system it's for track days, just one speaker will do for between home and the track.

I bought some new VDO gauges, cause, well, they old ones were scratched, and well, you know, I kinda wanted a common silver and black highlight theme through-out the interior. [:o)]

I've replaced the old Crane XR-700 thats been in use for 13+ years with a Crane HI-6 unit and LX-92 high output coil.

I've had a few more bits and pieces powder coated and chromed and spreay painted. The nose cone needed the black to be re-done.

If there was a screw or bolt I came accross I replaced it with stainless, if I came accross a rubber item I replaced it.

Yet another stage is almost complete. I've come to realise that this is a never-ending work in progress. Lots more to do but it's good for another year or two until I want to do something else.

Completed photos are yet to come....

My main motivation this time was to pay attention to the details for the Perth All Ford Day in late Oct which Rolly has invited me to under his Racetune banner.

Wow ... awesome. Such attention to detail.

Great to see this car evolve and continually improve, thanks for the update.

It's been a while, now I have some time I thought I'd add some photos from last Octobers All Ford Day.

Hey mate

Your car has come up a treat it looks mint. Are you happy with the crane ignition? Did you do up the instrument cluster your self would be interested to get mine done.

Great work.

Hi mate. Yeah I'm really happy with the Crane. Very easy to self install. I especially liked the rev limiter as I don't fancy blowing my engine up accidentally. The multi spark is great for low revs and twin webers. Burns the fuel better and reduces the low end rough running a bit.

Are you referring to the centre console?

Thought I'd do another update with where I've been at this winter... busy accumlating parts..
Ultimately I've always wanted a great track day car so I've been working towards that for the last 13 years or so. I've never really been inspired by the standard brake setup and was always wanting something more. Axle tramp has always been a problem, incorrect setup etc. So one thing has led to another and as usual has ended up over the top with a full re-do of the entire underside of the car.

Points to note:
Rear Axle:
Tran-X LSD 3.77 with uprated half shafts
Paul Dunstons R31 Caliper kit
Recoed R31 Calipers overhauled by myself - Sand blasted lightly and resprayed
Audi 90 Disk brakes
Re set King Springs FOR 24 with half rebound will be about 25mm lowered
Billstein tarmac spec shocks
Tramp Bars
Panhard Rod setup
New Nolathane bushes all round

Front Suspension:
Billstein uprated struts with tarmac spec inserts
200lb springs at the mo
Fully adjustable strut tops
AP Racing 15 inch brake kit
AP Racing 5040 Calipers - Resprayed
Alloy mounts and hubs
K-Mac Front Sway Bar

GRP4 Fabrications Peddle box with hydraulic clutch attachment for the future ;)
Remote reservoirs
Braided lines where required
New 2 1/4 Stainless mandrel-bent exhaust
New brackets welded for handbrake lines
Adjustable strut top mount

Hopefully shortly it will all be together. I'm waiting on Lee Welch to do some of the welding required. He's got quite the work schedule. A good sign of workmanship. A lot of the parts were sourced from GRP4 Fabrications in Ireland. I thought I'd take advantage of the great exchange rate. The rest from Rolly at Racetune

Home from being spray painted

Preparing to overhaul the R31 calipers, I couldn't be more happier with the results

The finished calipers. I hand painted the lettering back on.

Pretty much all the goodies ready to go on!
