Hi there,
A friend of mine recently joined the Capri family and purchased a 1969 Capri 1600 GT.
The guy he bought it off was an old bloke who had it for years but when he resprayed it he misplaced the I.D plate.
He promises it is a genuine GT and all signs so far point in the direction of it being a GT but with out the ID plate it is hard to be sure.
We have Identified that it is definitely a 1969 model from certain things on the car, but can't be sure if it is a GT
What other way could we find out if it is a Genuine GT
VIN number?

Thanks guys
Look forward to hearing from you guys

The Chassis number is stamped on the front engine bay slam panel and as Whooligan says it should read like CK17J*12345 where:
C = Australia (a Ford Britain affiliate)
K = Homebush (the Sydney Ford Factory where ALL the Capri's were assembled from CKD kits)
17 = GT Model, whether it be a 1600GT or a 3000/V6GT, from 1969 (1600GT) through 1970-72 (3000GT)
Note: (14 = Deluxe, 1600-1V from 1969-72 and 30 = XL models, 1600-2V from 1970-72)
J = 1969 (the year of assembly)
Note: (K=1970, L=1971, M=1972) (ALL production ceased in Nov, 1972)
* = another alphabetical character indicating the Month of assembly (ask for a decode)
12345 = the 5-digit production sequence number (allocated at the factory for each vehicle)

You should also find the original engine number stamped on the right-hand side suspension turret in the engine bay. Check this with the number stamped on the existing engine to see if they match.

NOTE: VINs didn't come into being until 1981 and are a unique world-wide 17 digit code used on ALL vehicles manufactured since 1 January, 1981.

Thanks for your help guys, your help has been greatly appreciated.
We tried to sand down the paint from the slam panel to find the chassis number but we couldn't find any stamped numbers?
Was the chassis number put in a different spot on the car in the 1969 models?
We found the chassis number on the suspension pillar but it doesn't have the CK number only starts with JC*****.

If the car ever got hit in the front you lose your chassis number if the slam panel was replaced.  The JC number on the DS strut tower is the original engine number, 1969 capris did not always match engine and chassis numbers.  There is an ID plate the size of a businss car on the DS inner guard half way between the slam and the strut tower - NOT on the heater plenum.  This plate would have had both numbers on it.
