BEE VEE
Hi everyone,

finally found the time to work on my recently aquired CK17ME Delete GTV6 ......and was hoping if anyone out there has any "PEARLS OF WISDOM" re overhaul of the engine and gearbox as I have no experience at all with the ESSEX 3L V6, and would love to avoid any pitfalls if possible.

My first mistake was letting my "apprentice" remove the heads; one pushrod he dropped managed to find its way past the camshaft and into the sump ! Wasn't planning on removing the pan, but maybe it's a "sign" to "check everything" even tho engine and tranny were running like a dream, except for a burnt E/valve on #3
cheers

GTV6
There are some good tips here http://www.essexengines.com/tuning%20the%20essex%20v6%20page%201.htm

especially the bit about avoiding high pressure oil pumps.

There is a lot that can be done with this engine, what you do will depend on if you want stock, mild or a fire breathing monster.

Also avoid boring to 60thou, I recall reading that it causes over heating problems because the walls are too thin.  As I have just found, the alloy timing gears are noisy, but its slowly settling down.  As I only have a mild cam (from Cam Shaft Shop New Zealand) I will probably put the nylon one back next time the engine is out.

Do it once, do it well :-)

Clive Cams in Bayswater, does a brilliant D port cam get the Grind #160 X 107 degrees also get the lifters refaced at the same time, cheap too.  Get on to ebay UK and see if you can find "Cords" piston rings for your car, these are brilliant

Thanks a mill Guys...........hope I don't need to touch Pistons or Cam as she was running perfect except for one burnt valve.
Methinks at least all 6 Ex valves should be replaced as I recall a rumor this is a known weakness, esp as 1,3,4 & 6 get less fuel than 2 & 5. Good reason to add "Castrollo" or SOO(super outboard 2stroke oil to every tank) as I have done on every car and engine I've ever owned since 16 and never had to lift the head from one engine in all these years.......yes, Dad musta been right! Makes sense as fuel is so dry and lube-free unlike the old days of LEAD.
cheers

    Hi All !

RED ALERT !..............I need a PAIR OF VGC D PORT HEADS   P L E A S E  ! ........local head guy wants $1000 to just fit 6 new exhaust valves and K-line them, which retail isn't super rich, but for trade I'm guessing it's a bit rich ?
Maybe I'm wrong ?  I'm up for enlightenment!

    Hi Bernie

You may be able to fit oversize stem exhaust valves instead of having to ft K-liners.

They are available from Burton UK
Not sure if they will fit your 165 HP engine tho.

Regarding the head refurbishment cost, does he have to fit new valve seats? Machine gasket faces? Do inlet valve seats? As well as supply and fit new valves, if so $1000 sounds about right, might be a tad on the rich side however I am a bit out of the loop nowadays regarding engine machining costs.

There is always this option if you wanted to get a bit fancy and spend a bucket load more.

Thanks for your reply and great "links" dukess900.................very helpful...... I had searched Burton power for the last 2 months with no luck, but one of your links showing 4 ex valves that I missed or wasn't there, for $25 eng pounds. May be what I need; will have to check my sizes at work on Monday. I emailed them(Burton), and they even told me that they had no valves at all for my 165HP engine: std or OS.........The Head repairer at Frankston is only sup&fitting 6 new exhaust valves and K-lining their guides, and nothing else, as he reckons rest of both heads have no other issues.......I do know they're flat as I checked them for true flatness myself before taking them to him.............I was amazed to find the VS seals were shrunken and brittle, and guide clearances were huge, and yet she never blew smoke or consumed oil(good by design) !!!!
    ............. cheers and thanks again.
