Wozzah i wouldn't say they are better but was very surprised at how well it does go . I've already spent a fortune on trying to get the webbers tuned right and had several dyno shop have a crack but all it seems to be doing is costing me money. Think my biggest mistake was buying secondhand setup to start with and trialing the holleys has cost me nothing as i have several different ones here as we have been racing speedway with holleys for years on holden 6 and ford 6's. If no of this worksout i may bit the bullet and buy new set of 45's or even look at injection.
The new webers aren't as good as the old ones. The biggest trouble with Webers is that its hard to find someone that knows what they are doing with them. I've had heaps come to me after being supposedly "tuned and spot on" when in reality they're no where near it. Once you have them right there is no going back to anything else, and they can be sized and jetted to suit any application. With injection you still have similar problems, getting someone to do a decent tune.
There is no doubt a Holley works very well, and is cheap and easy to set up. It may feel better because of increased air speed over the 45's. If thats the case, you may have an airspeed issue with either the 45's being choked incorrectly, or they are simply too big for the horsepower you're making. If thats the case it will be difficult to get the 45's right.
I just finished off an LC GTR torana with a set of 45's on it, mild engine. Someone else had had a crack at them before me and the tune was terrible for a relatively mild engine, it was very doughy down low and had no top end either. I played around a bit with the jetting and couldn't get a decent fuel curve either, it kept leaning out top end no matter what I did. The carbs had 36mm chokes in them that someone had machined (not a bad job either). I machined up some CNC's 34mm chokes for them. The difference in the car was incredible, and the jetting became instantly back to reality and changes in the jetting behaved exactly how it should have done. The venturis were simply too big and upsetting the air speed.
You need to find someone who knows their way around a Weber carb properly, once you have them right you'll be fine
Cheers
