I pick up my uncles V6 Capri in a couple of weeks and am equipping myself for the first going over of the basic consumables. However deeper searching into parts in case of the need for an engine rebuild has been a little disturbing. Specifically cast piston sets at $1300 per set seems a bit rich.
Are there different pistons options for the Essex that are used in Australia. I noted that there was a hypereuretic Buick V6 piston, 26cc dish for $400 per set, but a 96.5mm bore. So what do people use?

Hi Neil, I was just offered a set from a guy rebuilding a Cortina Perana for $340.00 for a set apparently they are the press type (I don't know what that means) and are from South Africa. I passed as it seems way to cheap and risky to me. Also i have had bad experience bringing things in from S.A but I could put you in touch with him if you like.

I've read about dealing with SA - it seems a risky venture. The new essex engines out of SA initially sounded good, but need lots of attention, so that seemed pointless.

These cars are expensive to restore.  I got all my engine parts from Burtons except the cam which came from NZ.  Make sure you order in separate lots under $1000 to avoid import fees.

Hi guys, this guy bought the Cortina Perana off Derek down in Vic, But one of the pistons and bores were shot. He is getting a Recon motor shipped for $3000 and reckons around $500 to clear customs but it sounds way to cheap for my liking. Also any issues their is nothing he can do. Pistons for $340 sounds cheap but you get what you pay for (and here we get ripped off daily so no hassling the South Africans unless its cricket or footy).
