Wondering what others used in regards to the above,

Can you get away with just a collapsible steering wheel boss like standard mk1 & 2 escorts have? I've had the boss cut off an old steering wheel, a new mounting flange professionally welded on then drilled & tapped threads to suit aftermarket steering wheel. This satisfied the overseeing engineer on my icv.

Did not even think escorts had collapsible parts in them, hmmm some food for thought their, can't use the Cortina and wouldn't be worth the hassle, just weld a lateral bar between the front legs and bracket from that

Yeah same - how is the Mk1 or Mk2 steering column or related components collapsible? From what I can see the column is a solid bar pointing straight at your skull in the event of a frontal impact. Additional to that the RS wheel is a steel ring attached to a solid boss.

Didn't the later model Mk2 Escorts have a ribbed (or corrugated) boss for the steering wheel? It's been too long since I've looked at an Escort, so can't remember.

This is meant to be the collapsible part of a mk1 column. Like SFE, I had a ring professionally welded onto the top of the mk1 section.

 
Not sure I'd want my head trying to compress that though!

This satisfied my Vic-roads listed approved engineer when I was building my icv.

Seems possible, ill check with the engineer as i have harnesses tied to the cage, will seek clarity on this
