Hi, My van leaks out the filler neck on corners, I have seen others with the same problem. How has the problem been fixed, all or any ideas welcome.

First check where the leak is, i`ve heard of the tanks rusting on the top surfaces though i`d put my money on the rubber section of the fuel filler

Its coming out the cap and running down the paintwork.

I used a second gasket from a spare fuel cap I had, seems to work ok.

I made a new cork gasget, baybe thicker cork. I have had a number of cars around this era and it seemed to be a common problem. The panel needs work around the filler and I was thinking of fitting a modern hidden filler with a flap in the neck. Has anyone done it?

I`m planning the same on my transit, you need to get the angle  of the downpipe to suit your car but will make for a nice tidy improvement on standard

I Thort I should reply with the 'hidden filler' arrangement. .i did this cause I think the van filler looks very " oh quick let's just stick the filler about here technique" by the lazy forgetful lads at the Ford plant... Even if the mk1 escort van was a cheap load lugger !
What i did was buy a filler door from a TC-TF Cortina sedan and then made the recess to suit

Here is the finished product. . The door opens by pushing the front part of the flap in.. it's also spring loaded and adjustable. The shape of the curve is just about spot on too !
I'll be running the van on LPG so i didn't need to keep the std tank stuff.
Cheers

Yes I agree they do look like a after thought, yours is the sort of thing I was thinking of. I was going to a wreckers and see whats around with the right profile and get the whole thing cut out. With the smaller neck size and internal flap I was hoping to fix the problem. It seems to be a 70s thing. A lot of cars had a stain down the panel.

this is what ive done,

ive put a XR - XY Falcon spill tray, you need to measure the distance between the four screw holes on the van and redrill the spill tray to suit, you will need to put spacers between the spill tray and the two screw holes facing the front of the van to make it sit flat, as the escort filler neck mounting does not sit strait to the body

I just sold one of those, I would rather stop the leak rather than divert it. I need to go to a wreckers and look at hidden fuel fillers. What is the black circle lower left from the fuel filler?
