Has anybody installed the old cast iron 18R gu 2 litre twin cam into an Escort? A period engine without the pollution gear and 130 to 140 bhp in standard tune, is it a viable proposition. I know that there are lighter more modern engines, but the 18R GU is available at the right price.

Cheers,

Pete

They were a great engine in their day but are seriously out dated now. I certainly wouldn't waste my time and effort.

If it was going into a Celica it would be a different answer

SERIOUS! What is the right price ? Free?
I have seen zetecs go cheap (i sold a 1.8 not that long ago for peanuts.) and you can run the same gearbox you have in your escort now. Off the shelf conversion bits and lots of info. I like toyota's but classic ford is well................... all about ford.

Steviestar, Do you want to sell it? I have a pair of Dellorto DHLA 40 that I was thinking of fitting. I thought they would marry up to the Mikuni/Solex manifold that is on the engine. I have heard that the Mikuni/Solex carbs on the 18R GU were not serviceable so I was planning on ditching them. The purpose of my post was to see if anyone had done it before, and maybe pick their brains on problems that I might encounter. I pick up the motor on Sunday, and I have a spare Mark 1 crossmember at home, so I can set it up to see whether it fits and what mods might be required. I see that I have bruised some sensibilities in suggesting a graft of a Jap engine into a classic Ford, but there is plenty of posts on SR20 and Volvo grafts, so it will not be the first time it has been done. I am still undecided on the way I will go, but even if I stick to the crossflow, the Celica gearbox will be handy in the Escy.

I reckon go for the 18R engine. Sounds like you're getting it cheap, and it'd be something completely different. Make sure you post pics of your progress
