If comparisons are to be made between past & present, there are other factors to consider. In the 80's there was no such thing as overpopulation and road rage. This is a social issue and the RTA/Qld transport/Qld police have no idea how to deal with it (other than employing more speed cameras to repay the 98 billion state gvt debt.

Population capping or improved public transport is the only way to go

Driver attitudes are definitely a problem here in western Sydney. Attitudes have been clearly deteriorating over the past several years.
Because of this I have reduced the amount of driving I am doing.

I drive approx 10k's to and from work using mainly residential streets. Rarely a day goes by that I am not hounded by some chickky on P's in a dunder box who thinks she owns the road, or a 4WD up my date because I am not going fast enough. But hey I do the speed limit plus usually several k's, but still I get over taken like I am an old man.

I agree the police are at a loss on how to address this problem.

My solution is that police should drive unmarked Escort panel vans loaded with speed cameras front and rear, because I am sure I see a lot of what the cops will rarely see.

Down here in the big smoke the local constabulary seem to find it continously difficult to locate a few thousand Reggy Racers !

I will get their rego numbers and (if it is a young good looking chikky) pass their vital statistics on to you. Consider it sort of a neighbourhood watch.
