Found out today that the RTA is seriously considering lowering all speed limits by 10kph.
So,
40 kph becomes 30,
50 kph becomes 40,
60 kph becomes 50,
80 kph becomes 70.
Not sure about the higher limits.

The spin version: The idea is to increase safety and to reduce vehicle carbon output.
The reality version: To increase RTA fine revenues, and to frustrate motorists enough to use public transport, or purchase more eco friendly smaller dunger boxes.

Maybe someone with more knowledge/wisdom than myself can confirm this wonderful news.

I know where i live, they are looking at reducing all the speed limits on the back roads, as the high way is closed and it will help wit congestion... so they think anyway

why cant they get it into their heads that if someone wants to speed they will. if they are doing 150kph it dosnt bother then that the limit is 50. lowering speed limits will just inconvenience everyone else

idiots will find a way to kill them selves and there is nothing you can do to stop it. FACT

Just put more traffic lights in, there used to be 3 sets of traffic lights between me & a 15min drive to work. now there is 9 sets and that certainly slows traffic down.

its doing my head in.
2 sections of freeway that have not changed, and they lower the limit from 110 to 80.
i think i did 80 once, then started driving along at 110 again.
they reduced some of the back roads.

The RTA's logic (following research from the UK) is that if we slow the traffic speeds down, the volume of vehicles will increase. The logic is that it will reduce the stop/starting and even out the flow of vehicles.

Go figure. I am an engineer of over 30 years experience. I am still trying to get my head around that logic.

the year is 2011 the current vehicle standards are very high having looked in to build a kit/icv there are a lot of adrs to comply with these days. cars now have ,abs brakes, active stability control, traction control ,air bags (whole interior basics is big pillow, driver space awareness alarms, active curise contol(will stop you running in to cars in front)crumply zones. electroning seat belts and heafd rests im sure there is more. so what i'm geting at is even monkeys couyld drive these cars they are meant to bew super safe. driver now do 100 and something hour to get there licince to start with so hopefully they get the idea(most dont but that just another story)

the year 1986( i was 5 for those that care) we didn't have a family car so went camping in dads toyot dyna tip truck sat in the back on an old seat dad bolted to the tray with all the camping gear drove to south Sydney had a great weekend and didn't seem to die. all car drove round street at 60 around town 110 on the freeway the whole freeway.

the year 2001 i had a 1983 nissan a patrol and a job in orange nsw but girl friend live in newcastle so every Friday night would blast back to newcastle through the the bells line road a 100 with no problem rain hail snow it didn't mater my 18 year old 4wd never had a problem.

no but to the year 2011 no the cars are better equiped and yes have more power drivers also driuvers get more training. but they wish to reduce the speed linit so with all the improvements our goverment havbe force on the car market they wish to force the speed limits down this would be because the road qauilty has been decreasing over the years. the government has been increasing the cost of buying cars by making them have more saftey stuff and also increasing the cost of regos and insurace buthey have fail to fix the road for the last 10-15 years and now are force to lower the speed limit as they have let the road go for so long now that even with all the saftey features cars have once they hit a big pot hole at 110 and rip of a wheel or roll all the saftey feature dont save the car and the people casue the cars fall apart because they are build of tin foil so the manufactures can afford to put all the reauire safty crap in them.

I still think a Defensive Driver Course should be a mandatory requirement to get your licence and maybe a refresher every 5-10 years.

Logistically it would be a nightmare for everyone to go through it (courses would have to be Australia wide) and it would be expensive. But surely that has to be a 'safer' option then anyone getting their licence after passing the theory test, then getting behind the wheel and see what happens - if you don't crash, you should improve your skill level.

All you have to look at is the number of "P" platers that want to hang the back of the car out on a roundabout in the wet and watch them lose it.
