Hey guys,

Just put the timing belt on and have a few queries about alignment of pulleys and orientation.

1) are the cam pulley and auxiliary gear identical, i.e. can they be interchanged? The faces look different but the teeth seem to line up as well as the keys... The reason I ask this is because I've gotten them mixed up and can't tell from the manual or photos of my engine before tear down which one is which... Picture 1 shows the setup of my gears

2) I've rotated the gear twice to orient the belt and get it to settle into tension, however I'm unsure if the belt should be sitting how it is on the aux gear and camshaft gear (too close to the engine?). These are shown in picture 2 and 3

3) The timing plate that goes onto the back of the camshaft pulley doesn't line up through the whole as I expected, is this normal (picture 4).

I understand that question 2 and 3 could be void if I've set this up wrong, but any input would be appreciated, first build and super tentative not to bend valves.

It looks OK but have you got the backing plate on the cam pulley?  You realy need this as this is what keeps the belt from falling off!

Here is a better link to you photos - http://s104.photobucket.com/albums/m196/draneman/

I can post some photos of mine if you want.  Let me know.

Cheers,

Matt

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the quick reply (and sorry about the photos, new to posting up photos!)

When you say backing plate, do you mean the plate with the timing marks that goes behind the cam pulley, or do you mean the thrust washer that sits behind the fan pulley on the crankshaft gear?

A photo of yours would be great Matt, like I said just want to be 100% that this will work!

Cool,

I mean the plate behind the Cam gear.

Here are the pics but it's a but hard to take them with the radiator in.

Any questions let me know.

Cheers

Matt

Hey Matt,

Thanks for that, I believe that plate is for the timing aswell, mine is on and in place...

My belt doesnt seem to be sitting like yours though, might have to change that aux gear around...

Thanks in advance!

1. Pulleys are correct.
2. Looks to be sitting OK to me.
3. From memory there iis some free play between the keyway and the backing plate, should be centred before tightening the cam pulley retaining bolt.
4. wind over by hand (IIRC 19mm spanner on crank pulley bolt) a few times - if nothing hits all good....

It all looks pretty good after another look.

As jimmy said turn it over by hand a few times and it may centre the belt.

Cheers

Hey guys,

Thanks again for the responses.

I have turned it over 4 times already, any harm in doing another two before engine is primed with oil?

I'll have a look at that keyway again tomorrow, thanks for the advice James.

Cheers!

Half a dozen manual revolutions should be fine assuming you have made judicial use of lubricant when assembling - main thing is valves have not hit pstons so should be fine to crank over under power. Many years ago I knocked up a long hex drive I chuck in a cordelss drill a for priming the engine before first start up to avoid dry cranking - have to remove the dizzy though...

Thanks James. So you would definately know if the valves fouled on the pistons I'm guessing with a manual turnover...
