Hi all
 
Been a while since I have been on here but im trying to get my Capri looking and working as it should again.
 
Keeping up with maintenance has not been a priority for me since having little ones and the car has suffered.
 
Anyhow I wanted to ask if anyone has any ideas about my latest Capri based drama. The dreaded noisy diff.
 
The diff has developed a noise like a bent axle (thump, thump, thump) but only when taking left hand corners. Right hand corners and straight roads are fine.
 
I have pulled the axle on that side and the axle and bearing look good. I have looked down the tube with a torch and rotated the other axle but cant see anything bad.
 
Im guessing I just have to take it to a diff place but just thought I would ask the knowledge bank on here.

Hi Damien, nice to see you still have the blue beast.
Regarding the diff its good when the noise can be proven to come from one side. (in this case the right side).
First, swap the rear wheels side to side and test to see if the noise has changed sides. If it has then its a wheel/tyre problem. If its still on the right side its likely the wheel bearing as Glenn says.

I did check the bearing when I pulled it out and it seemed fine to me. I replace the bearing some ten years ago but the car may have only done 3000km since then as I dont drive it as much as I would like.
 
As you mentioned with your car, mine did sit for a year undriven while I tracked down a type 5 gearbox for her which makes me wonder if the same thing has happened (dried out seals).
 
Its not annoying it sounds like im going to do real damage $$$ to it (LOUD THUMPING)

Yes the blue beast lives on and is still registered but needs attention
 
I hadn't considered it might be a wheel problem so that is a good suggestion that ill need to check. But it sounds real bad.

I doubt its your outer bearings or wheels, (unless your wheel nuts are loose).  When bearings sit for a long time, as well as drying out the seals they also get a small flat spot which causes a regular cyclical noise which gets worse as wear accelerates.  Noise only when cornering is usually to do with the spider gears or their bearings.   See this http://www.skf.com/binary/79-61924/TT08_024.pdf

I think you're right in that the spider gear bearing on that side is the culprit in this as my nuts are never loose!
 
I changed the wheel bearings when they sounded grumbley all the time and now they feel ok and dont have many kms on them.
