Hey guys, just connecting up the starter motor on my 2.0L and having a few uncertainties.

I've studies some other threads such as this http://www.classic-ford.org/cfp/tm.aspx?m=46738&high=engine+bay but i'm still unsure of whats required???

I've got a couple of pictures of the top and bottom of the starter motor showing some connection points, but it seems i've only got 1 spade connector on my wiring in the bay..

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

top

I'm assuming the large bolt takes the red wire from the battery... others - not too sure!

Thanks in advance

Hi Mate,

I just rewired mine recently with a relay.  The battery goes to the big connection.

I am pretty sure the top connection is the trigger connection and the bottom one is the ground.

I'll have a look for you later today.

Do you have a manual with a wiring diagram?

Cheers,

Matt

the push on terminal on  the bottom is for the start wire the other one on top is for a start bypass for the ignition wich you shouldn't need don't connect it to anything. and just the main battery cable . hope that made sense

Thanks matt and jp.

I do have a manual but the wiring diagram hasn't been too much help. did you end up having a look? just want to confirm it???

I have taken a few pics but not saure they'll do you any good as I have a starter relay wired up.

The coloured wires are not in my wiring diagram so I am not really sure where each one goes.

Though if I had to bet the bottom terminal is the trigger from the ignition.

The two red wires are to the starter relay and the altenator

Cheers

Matt

Hey guys so i've wired it up with the red larger gauge wire from the battery to the bolt, then i've put the spade connection on the top connector, but all i'm getting is that starter motor *click*.....

Is there something i'm missing?

The wires I have are from the 1.6L, so is there an extra wire that needs installing?

If you hear a click then it would appear that the solenoid is engaging the starter teeth onto the flywheel.  Maybe the internal contacts in the starter motor or dirty/worn.  Could also be a dud battery or a dirty connection on that battery cable.

Just incase you didn't know (if you did then ignore), the small cylinder bit on the top of the starter motor is a solenoid.  It's job is 2 fold.  Firstly, when it receives power from the ignition switch (when turned to the start position), the energised solenoid pushes the starter motor shaft forwards to engage the starter teeth with the flywheel.  The second job is that it closes some internal contacts that takes power from the big fat battery cable you connected to turn over the starter motor.  When you release the ignition key, the solenoid returns to its steady state position and the contacts are closed thus stopping the starter from turning.
