This is the classic question that I have been asked so many times that it's not funny! My reply is always your car, whatever it may be, is worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay, assuming that you actually want to sell it in the first place. You can throw thousands at a Capri, but in my humble opinion you shouldn't pay any more than mid-$30k's for a pristine unit, as you never know what's underneath!

Yes exactly Foxy Capri !  ..........people will pay according to how bad they want it and how rare it is..............and then you get millionaires, or very wealthy, or sugar daddies, willing to outbid or GUZUMP everyone else and make outrageously high $ propositions to blow the competition away because they can afford it.

Who would ever think a guy would pay $5,500.oo for a Brand new OS still in box XB GT Radiator Grille ! ....... and some other guy asked me to remove a HK Monaro Wheel arch mould(new o/s) from ebay and came along with $1200.oo cash for what was originally $15.65 ! ............year in & year out I see people paying "drug money" for exclusive one-off items we'll never see again. He drove his 2nd car, a magnificent as-new genuine SLR5000 from SA to Melb to pick it up !
I approached a few Plastic Manufacturers, big and small, thinking I could reproduce the XB GT Grille from the new one by the dozen or even hundreds...............$30,000.oo was the cheapest starting price just to make the "dies" for any amount from one upwards ! ..........and then without considering fees Ford would want as "royalties" per unit !
Too risky: how many could I possibly sell , and at what price ?

If you have something super-rare, and one only, why sell it dirt cheap and have "seller's remorse" when there's millionaires/very rich/sugar daddies  out there willing to pay drug money ? .......unless you're very rich and dont need the money I guess.

One dose of "seller's remorse" was enough for me; I still pine after my HK Panel Van/Monaro 20 yrs ago

I paid, by my estimations, $5000 over the odds recently for a capri I really wanted.  As its one I wont sell on, I just sucked it up and looked long term.

Selling cars, its a Want to sell versus Need to sell situation for people.  The GXL above is no doubt worth more than the purchase price, but, most likely the seller needed cash right now versus waiting for offers and dealing with the open market (tyre kickers as they were referred to elsewhere above).

I reckon the 1969 1600 gt's will creep up in price - v6's get done up but those 69's with the factory black outs etc - u don't see an awful lot of them - and they look ace!

Really there weren't that many 1600gt's made. I smashed one to bits when I was young. Bought it from an old pensioner and got (mates) people in the know to check it over. It was around 1996, when I got it home and checked myself it was the biggest rust bucket I'd ever seen. It was registered as a pensioner as well so couldn't cash in the rego. I can't see why Capris don't price as well as Toranas etc. It's not numbers sold as Capris win in fewest numbers for rarity. Also cost more in renovations, so are they just not as iconic enough as others? Not in my opinion.

Broadly speaking, I think GTV6 Capri values are similar but slightly behind GTR Toranas (not XU1s). The reason GTRs are higher is they're a close relation to XU1s, which were successful at Bathurst with Brocky at the wheel. Capris have good Bathurst history, but not that good.

Take a look at this GTR. Very good resto, comes with original engine, excellent inside and out.

Now compare that to the violet Capri I linked to earlier. That Capri doesn't hold a candle to that GTR for quality and value for money, yet the Capri was listed for more. It's nice to see values for our cars go up, but like Whooligan said we shouldn't be unrealistic.

Cheers

Really there weren't that many 1600gt's made.

According to the Ford production statistics from Homebush, there were 2,217 1600GTs built (1692 manuals & 525 autos) out of the grand total of 14,638 Capri's assembled. The last three 1600GTs built were assembled in January 1970 and all 3 were manuals, it would be interesting to know if any of these 3 still survive today! With the arrival of the GT/V6 models in February 1970, the 1600GTs became the XL version, still the same Capri but without the GT stripes and bonnet blackouts.

i think  the real difference bewteen the capri and why the torana is a bit more in value
is the peter brock factor and also that holden didnt really have much to compete against the ford back in the early days ...

ford were bringing out gt v8's mostly at the time and the lj was the only holden that had or stood a chance against the fords ..then came slr which isnt that great in value comapred to the same model ford xa xb  gt get a original ho gt phase 4 and the torana doesnt even come close to the value of the ho

now that xu1 is at 90,000 fully restored altho looks nice but there's no way id pay that for a resto xu1 ..
not sure if any of you blokes seen pawn stars australia  but they had a perfect example on that show unmolested original condition never been restored and everything on it xu1 in excellent condition and he couldnt get 75 gs for it
as all collectors know that anything in original condition excellent condition will always sell more than resto jobs

by the way did any of you blokes watch the brocky movie on tv

all i got from that show is that he was a wife basher  a womaniser  and a fruit loop

i still remember removing the polarizer from a few vl's at the time and storing them so nobody rips it as it was a motor auction , i was also perplexed at the time on how this thing worked ,

also showed how great allan moffat was as a person great character

I have read this topic with a fair amount of interest.

Long story short I recently sold my 1970 GT V6 Capri (Hot Orange), it wasn't advertised for sale but I had it displayed at a local car show and I was made a offer that I believed was fair and reasonable by a car enthusiastic who certainly appreciated the amount of time and effort I put in the restoration.

We have a bit of "gentleman's agreement" not discuss the sale price, however as a hint I believe it is a record price for a Capri GT V6 (non RS3100) in Australia and as a another hint above genuine Torana XU-1 prices.

Like said in a earlier post, a car is worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it.
