Restoring a 1949 Ford sedan with my dad. We have a 289 that we pulled from a 60's mustang and rebuilt to go into the 49'. We are trying to figure out what type of transmission to go with that will bolt up to the 289 and work with the existing 3spd column shifter. My dad wants to go with an automatic transmission but I am convinced that a 3spd manual will require less modification as the car is already setup to work this way. What do you think? Manual or automatic? And, what type of transmission will work? as my dad and I dont know much about transmissions.

Thanks for your help!

If you wanna stick with a 3 spd manual I would go for a 3 speed top loader. It shouldnt be too hard to adapt a shifter to work with your column shift
