Surely the tags won't match the chassis number without fraud? So the vehicle will only ever be a replica anyway. Just buy a real RS or don't bother....

Yes it is illegal to change tags though you may have some options - try contacting the RTA and see what they say. Because it is such an old car, they may have a way of getting your car registered without tags

Many years ago I contacted Vic Roads about re registering a car that was missing its ID tags. Back then they said as long as the chassis number is still intact and the vehicle had previously been registered in Victoria, they should have a record of it and it can be re registered, but it would be next to impossible trying to register it in another state should I move or sell the car.

Might be worth looking into before scrapping/committing fraud...

Yes usually in Vic you dont need a tag just legible (and legit) chassis and engine numbers.  Worst case scenario you get a VP number allocated to you which you stamp in a permanent part of the body/chassis.

Is there anywhere you can get blank tags?

I have only ever seen one Aust made unstamped tag for sale it was on ebay a few years back.  You can buy new UK ones (they will even stamp them for you) but not Australian ones
