Why would passing an emissions test be difficult?
These cars had to pass ADR27A in 1979.
Today's fuels burn much cleaner.
The efi system will ensure cleaner burning of the fuel than the OEM carburettor.
If issues are likely program the efi to the lean side to pass the emissions test.
After the test reprogram to what you want.

I am going down the same path with a turbocharged 2.2 litre Escort engine with programmable efi.
I expect the engine to have far less emissions than the standard 2 litre engine originally fitted to the car in 1980.

Hi Peter.
My thoughts exactly .
However it's how the states' regulating body interpret the regulations applicable when performing an engine conversion and the conditions that must be met when applying to do so. It gets muddy with later engines as some impose the emissions that apply to the donor engine and not the car which can make it more difficult to go with non OEM gear.

That was my understanding as well. You have to meet the emissions of the engine you are using not the car.
That said so many of the rules seem to be open to interpretation. For my exhaust I had a catalytic converter
added as the Zetec had one from factory. Whether anyone took any notice of it or not can't say.

Unfortunately it's not just a matter of leaning the engine out. For instance, although that will reduce HC, it does so at the expense of higher NOx. It's a balancing act. That said, fuel injection on a more modern engine with a catalytic converter should easily pass ADR27A. IMO that is all that an Escort should be expected to pass, after all, the authorities will accept a Pinto, so why not something cleaner?

I’m just gonna do what I’m told 😉.
Hoping it all goes to plan.....

Fuel tank is finally in after much procrastination in how to securely position the tank approximately 30mm lower at the front to accommodate the additional height of my custom fuel pump arrangement. Ended up fabricating standoffs that incorporate the original mounting hardware plus an EB Falcon fuel pump cover plate to finish it off.

More progress.
Finished the fuel and rear brake lines. As I'm running a dead head fuel system I only require a single delivery line. Also installed the front brake lines and terminated the lines to the pedal box fittings. Have made allowance also to run a hydraulic clutch as I'm still yet undecided.
As I want to omit the speedo cable for an electronic version I don't want to butcher my RS dash to house an updated speedo so I picked up a set of VDO gauges for the right money and although tight, they should all fit nicely. I know they're not everyone's cup of tea but I have a few other mods as well to make them look a little different. At least I will have a set of reliable gauges and as a bonus the fuel gauge suits the Escort 90-10 ohm sender .
