Most, if not all modern cars have a cabin circulation system.
When the windows are wound up ADR require air to flow freely from the vent at the base of the windscreen (a high pressure area when the car is traveling over 60kmph) through the cabin, to the base of the rear window, through the boot area and out the air vents located in the c pillars. The boot area is an important part of the circulation.
 
So if there is fuel located in the boot, vapours will escape and possibly contaminate the fresh air in the cabin. Regulations require a sealed box and vented to fresh outside air.
 
I will not fit fuel related items in the boot for this reason.
Also will lose a substantial part of the available boot space which to me is important for a street car.

i know escort have tank in the boot. i just didn't understand the reason for the extra box. i assumed the the boot was sealed from the cabin in the photo but guess its not. its a lot easier to use a box than to make plates to seal above the wheel arches. that's painful!
 
my boot is sealed from the cabin and i run my fuel pump setup behind the rear seat back. i ran it this way with a drop tank and with the side tank that i have now. i don't use a surge tank but i would think that a small one would fit fine in the space behind the back seats and not take up much boot space.
i went back to the side tank in mine because of the fuel surge issues and haven't had a problem since.
 
i have seen people do it like in the picture with a small surge tank and pumps and all in the space above the diff and in front of the tank but that seems to me like it is asking to be hit by something. i would rather it in the boot.

We tried to argue with the road department that escorts came stock with fuel tank in the boot, also the fact that the fuel tank filler hose and the fuel tank breather hoses are in boot space as per factory on my rs, including a mention of many other early cars that have fuel tanks behind back seat etc. they just said that any non standard hoses pumps surge tank etc if located in boot space must be in vapour proof box and vented outside. It was not negotiable.
The good thing about it is that there is never any fuel smell/fumes in the car, and I guess if it does spring a leak it will just leak outside.

Looking at what others have done I made a custom flange to take a FG falcon pump assembly. Was not difficult. Before boot floor painted I cut a hole and welded in a flange so I can fasten the BA falcon pump cover with nutserts.

There has been progress but not a lot.
I am using the standard Mk2 Escort fuel pickup at the moment.
Tank is not modified in any way.
Small efi fuel pump fitted just above the fuel pickup.
I made a surge tank located where the carbon canister used to be. Identical diameter to the carbon canister so still uses the factory carbon canister clamp to the bulkhead.
Large efi fuel pump then to the custom inlet manifold.
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator and usual return line.
 
I've been sidetracked with other stuff. Although spent a bit of time early last year on the 6 link rear suspension with the BW axle housing which is now fitted, except the adjustable coilovers. No body mods were needed except 8 off 6mm diameter holes hidden under boot floor mat and floor pan under rear seat.

Thanks for the replies. I’m toying with the idea of using a Mk1 Escort side tank with an in tank pump and possibly a weld on Sump to keep everything discrete.

For those with a Mk2 I can recommend this. Just installed it for my Zetec conversion

So your not running a carbon canister Pete?

Should be no requirement to include a carbon canister. No carby to leak gases.
The rear end is in place. Just need the coilovers and final welding.
