Bit of advice please. Finally picked up my 2 door cortina shell from a mates place and will be heading to motor reg to tfr into my name. It's a rolling shell minus the original motor and box. I have the following questions as I want to avoid an inspection and basically make it a walk in rego...
 
The drivers side strut top has the number CK1254C stamped , this is not on the compliance plate? Looks like a build guide/shell ID number?
 
Passenger side front panel has these numbers stamped, CG71JR followed by 19723, both these are on the compliance plate.
 
I have a set of plates for the car but no papers, question is do these numbers stack up? If like escort the motor is sequential stamping what would it be? With the engine number I can tfr and register, don't mind then starting the build. 
 
The shell is very solid and came with a free front cut but is sad looking so the whole build inc shell, motor, axle, box and all fittings only owes me $400 so if the numbers are suspect i'll just part it out.
 
I'm suspicious cos the guy I bought it from also had a Capri that he had re-shelled and just swapped the compliance plates!! Fool.
 
Never had a Cortina so just not sure how the numbers run...It just looks so cool in coupe form so would love to save it if I can.

If the chassis number is the same as the compliance you should be right, its been 20 years since I last owned a MK2 so bare with me I'll see if I've still got the books....
Not sure what its like over there but in WA you can do a vehicle history check, it'll tell you all the old owners, km's (or miles for the old mk2) at transfers and if there has ever been any insurance claims on the vehicle. Cheap piece of mind. Maybe try fordcortina.com.au aswell, they may be able to help...

Really?  How do you do that?

Here in NSW you can approach the RTA (or whatever they call themselves now) and apply through freedom of information to release the list and details of the past owners for the past 25 years (25 years is the limit of records).
The RTA were very openly and actively supportive and went to a lot of trouble for a very minimal fee to send out letters to the list of past owners asking for their permission to release the information. It is up to the past owners to approve or disapprove. Also included is all past licence plate numbers and purchase and sale dates.
 
I did this with an RS2000 I restored in 2009/10. Came up with 16 past owners (going back to only 1984) including two second hand car yards, including all purchase and sale dates and registration numbers. Only one past owner refused permission. All the past owners I could find where happy to talk about their old car and were happy to know it was still around and being restored. Two past owners couldn't wait and immediately phoned me as soon as they received the RTA letter!
 
I did the same exercise in early 2013 for another RS2000 I am now restoring. I followed exactly the same procedure however found it was nearly impossible for the RTA (or whatever they call themselves now) to supply the documentation quoting "not in the public's interest". So obviously some changes have occurred.
 
 

In SA that ID tags mean nothing other than the making sure tags match shell. Motor can have been swapped unknown amount of times and you wont know last engine number unless you have the papers - assuming the previous owners did a legit engine swap via the right paper work.
 
I have swapped engines and filled out paperwork before but not sure what happens if you try to register a car with a non-matching number engine - If it comes to an inspection it will most likely hold you up for a while whilst the engine number is cleared to ensure not stolen etc.

Thats the best i can pull of the plate, same as one above, but 100% CG71JR...Plate swap maybe.
 
Strut top stamping is CK1254C
 
Not sure what all that means....?
 
 

I'll have a look at mine and cross reference to see what/if any matches up with the id plate and body stamping and give you an answer during the week.
