Smcka had conversion kits awhile ago at very good price. zetec bolts stright up to std gearbox. try to get manual zetec so your not chasing flywheel. you need to decide if going carby or injection. manifolds are available for bike carbs or DCOE/DHLA set ups. megajoilt is the simplest adjustable ignition set up for carbs, you can get the whole kit from trigger wheels in UK including wiring and Ford connectors to run std zetec crank and camsensors.
you will need a sump, water rail, correct waterpump rotation (depending on what belt system you use) starter moter depends on which flywheel/sump kit you end up with. price them up then look again at smackas kit.

All that is needed.. (for black top - silver top is slightly different but also available)

But how can you get a Zetec conversion registered? In SA I think they want you retain standard ECU and injection. Anyone got a solution to this?

I picked up my escort a few months ago 1 owner full log books. Heaps of things to do but 1st a nice ZETEC
Spoke to my engineer yes would sign off if engine was standard but with TB and after market ECU needs pollution test 1st but should pass easy for adr of 1980.

I'm pretty sure that in SA the car has to pass an emission test relevant to the engine and not the shell

Programmable ECU? Just give it a clean map for emissions test then do what you like after that :)

I make my own sump from a Silvertop, engine mounts can be modified from pinto mounts, keep the zetec 2.0 flywheel and clutch as it fits the escort box and works just fine. I got my headers from JBA in USA Which are nicknamed shortys and do the job fine.
On my mk1 van I've decided to run it on lpg.. Not such a bad plan as emissions are hardly a problem. Plus if I decide to boost it I'm not up for big dyno reprogramming costs, well I hope so anyways ! It's also getting time to call my engineer again.
Martin.
