Thanks! Yes nothing compares to the feel of a older house. Its been many years coming and now i can say the kitchen costs more then the car so justify some spending to the other half.

Bet you also never knew how many shades of cream there were either! We spent hours shopping for just the right one!

Yes on 15s but do love 13s on escorts hence why id love to have both options. Ive got a gartrac box which uses the oem throttle pedal which i think should have enough play in it.

Do you use the oem throttle pedal or a grp4 style one?

GPR4 Fabrications box with girling masters. Came with a throttle but it was a bit fiddly And I don’t think something was right just didn’t fit nicely so modified the original

checked all leads and ensured they were in correct firing order

set the timing again statically and then bought a timing light and made sure it was correct. Think this was part of the solution to improved running. Easy to make mistakes and I had set it to what I thought was 6°BTDC but was actually more like 2-3. Had done this as that’s what it said in the manual I was looking at but I failed to read on and that was for the auto. Corrected this to the 12°BTDC it says for the manual. Also used a paint marker to make the Timing makes a little more visible, this really helped see how far out I was and when I had rotated the distributor too far.

I also checked the valve gaps and not sure what happened here when I previously set them but some of the inlet ones were out by 0.20. I also tested the compression and found some variation but need to recheck now I have the valves 100%. What sort of figure should I be looking for with the compression?

Also found a vacuum hose that was previously blocked with a bolt (not sure why, not sure what the hose is even for) but her Fireworks had clearly shot this out. Clamped that off and helped the idle enormously.

Also rechecked the head bolts and did the recheck after running. Do people drain the coolant and remove the thermostat housing to check the torque on the head bolt underneath?!?!

Something still doesn’t seem right, but today’s efforts certainly improved the old girls running. I still can’t get her to idle  below 1000rpm and she is blowing out of the dipstick and rocker cover breather quite heavily plus a few other bits but we made progress so today was a good day!

Anyone know what this vacuum hose that is clamped is supposed to be connected to?

Using a paint marker on the timing marks made life a lot simpler!

GRP4 stuff is pretty high quality but everyone says the grp4 style pedal is a pain in the ass, one of the reasons i went the gartrac box as it works with the oem throttle pedal (or so im told - not installed it yet).

Well done on getting it running a bit better - always one step forward is a good one.

Aaargh that hose looks familiar, haven't been near a Kent in ages though.
Its not part of the crankcase vent is it? That'd explain the pressure build up.
Are you still in the Joondalup area? I'm nearby and happy to help out if needed.

Mine seems to have the T piece for part  6A740. It always had it blanked off since I bought the car and never had any problems. Think it’s to do with some of the compression numbers

Not up in Joodalup anymore, south of the river living with family while we wait for the tenants to leave our rental. Might need a hand soon think I have a big job on my hands...

Think you made the right choice I might end up swapping mine.

Thanks but I think I just gave a terminally ill CARdiac patient some drugs to ease the symptoms not fix the problem haha

Tested the compression again today and after yesterday’s results (even though the valves weren’t quite right) I wasn’t expecting good numbers

Cylinder 1: 30, 35, 30 (tested three times to be sure, removing tester every time)
Cylinder 2: 125
Cylinder 3: 120
Cylinder 4: 115

Put a couple of squirts of oil in Cylinder 1 to get an idea if it was a valve or ring issue and the pressure came up to 60, 70, 85. As far as my knowledge goes this suggests that it is a problem with the rings which would also explain the increase in sump pressure. Please if I’m mistaken let me know before I pull the engine out and try and learn how to rebuild it!

Eww not the southside! Only kidding
Have an engine crane and stand here you're welcome to if it helps keep the costs down and gets another car back on the road.
