Just a small update... The coil and distributer arrived today. Not really sure how to fit it but thats a problem for a bit later :)

So... where to begin...

I suppose to put it simply, all the parts in the previous pictures are now on and this makes me very happy!!

Firstly the Ap's and the Gaz coilovers were fitted. This was a bit of a hassle with some of the parts having to have a little "modifying"

The change it gave to the car was extraordinary though, it stops like it's hitting a wall and the coilovers make it handle like a dream!!!

Picture after just coilovers and Ap's but the rear still awaiting fitting.

Having not fitted the rear springs, bushes or dampers and massively increased the front spring and damper rates, I did notice that the balance had changed pretty dramatically and although cornering immensely faster, it did have the tendency to understeer a little too much for my liking. However over this past weekend I managed to find the time to to fit all the rear suspension components.

The new rear setup combined with the changes at the front has altered the car dramatically and made it an awesome little weekend driver even in its current underpowered state.

New brakes only just fit!!

Before coilovers, brakes and rear suspension

After coilovers, brakes and rear suspension

Next step: Engine development!!

Gorgeous little mk2, really like the loud colour.
Some solid suspension and brake upgrades too.

Are your single leaf springs decambered or standard ride height?

Hi evobda2
Cheers for the positive comments!

They are decambered about an inch or two lower

Great build going on there!

Must be happy with the brake setup!! Nice.

I've done a similar rebuild (ok no huge brakes) to my suspension and got a set of yokohama a539s and it becomes really apparent how underpowered the whole car is with the std kent!

A little tip from a fellow WA escort driver:

I know you miught be attached to the old school plates, but trust me, spend the $20 at your local licensing centre and get yourself a new set of the white/blue ones. Having these plates makes you much less attractive to the police - trust me, i've experienced it first hand.... a motorcycle cop pulled me up months ago and was this - - close to giving me a yellow sticker for a number of things. He let me off with a $100 fine (yeh, great guy...) but did say I should get my plates changed, cos the old plates are what attracted him in the first place!

Since the plate change I've come across plenty o cops that haven't looked twice at me - maybe it is the new set of superlights and tyres that do it tho ;)

Happy scorting!

Cheers Matt! It is always great to have positive feedback

Nick,
Yeah I do notice that now with the new suspension setup magnifies how very underpowered the engine is but then again what can you expect from a 30yo engine haha... Don't worry thats next on the list of things to do!!!

Yeah Im rather fond of the plates but I think the noise and the shiny wheels and bright colour draw enough attention so changing the plate will make little difference hahaha

How do you find the A539's? Im not sold on them... They are great for the road but I think the only way to go for racing is semi slicks...

Michael
P.S. We should go for a cruise some time Nick, it is always great to meet with fellow Escort enthusiast!!

Hi Michael

So far im quite happy with the a539s. I haven't pushed the car yet because i still need to get my carby tuned (got a 32/36 off a 2ltr and im still running 2ltr jets - very boggy), but they do seem very grippy, even in the wet! I've never felt so secure in an escort in bad weather! As for racing, I've promised myself to not even consider it until ive got cash for some serious engine/diff/brakes work! I think Racetune do semi-slicks, but if midlandwheels.com stock them (think so) it'd probably be way cheaper landed anyway.

One real bonus of the new plates is that it makes your car look like it's just gone over the pits/been re-registered. I guess the best we can do is make sure we are undefectable and remain chummy if we do get pulled over

As for a cruise, yeah I would be keen. Gimme a week or so to get my carb issue sorted and my longer wheel studs in, then im all game! Whereabouts are you located? Will it involve beer??? ]

Hey Nick,

Haha yeah I would get them from Midland Wheels in the Uk so much cheaper. The A539's are great in the wet I will agree with that.

I plan on doing just some hill climbs and sprint events but I think I will have to upgrade the cooling system first (It overheated a little on just a few spirited laps of a local industrial estate)  and I am planning to move to a Pinto as thats what was originally in the car.

I guess the plates do give that impression of just being re-registered. But I think smiling and generally being polite is the way to escape a sticker haha.

Ah Im up in Joondalup, let me know. I need to do my rear wheel studs too but hopefully I will get them out the way this weekend. Have you done much work to your escort? Do you have a build thread?
