well jds as my little beast has been through hell and back and has stood the test of time through police and traffic inspections i would think it cant be that bad as they are pretty strict in qld and the angles etc of the tail shaft are fine and the motor sits fine with good clearance under bonnet all that with over 400hp @ the wheels you would think some problem would of showed up over the 8 years of the conversion !!!! and that goes for the steering angle and rack being lowered ,the car has been to drag, track and drift days with no steering problems ... every one who has a sr in the Escorts have spaced the x member down lowered the rack or if the rack is left at the same position THEN you will have steep angles and tail shaft angle issues which you would know of course! So while the rack mounts have been moved you have no idear how far etc and unless you own a escort with modded mounts for a sr you would have no clue on its effect eccept for text thats written in a book or on the net which you cannot always take as fact[:o)]!!!!!

510pom, I wasn't personally attacking you, appologise if it came across that way. I was only pointing out the fact that lowering the steering rack is NOT recommended and the fact the tail shaft angles ARE important to yours and other road uses safety if and when something goes wrong. But I would expect you to defend your cross member that you have sold to Shea and others, and that's fine. Again, I'm not bagging it. Just pointing out facts.

In saying that, I would like to clarify a few things in your reply.

Traffic and Police inspections are highly unlikely to pick up tail shaft angles now are they?? And while QLD modification laws are strict yes, they're not as strict as other states. I know of a few cars that could not be registered in VIC and NSW, being sold and now registered in QLD.

all that with over 400hp @ the wheels you would think some problem would of showed up over the 8 years of the conversion
Consider yourself very lucky. Let's hope your luck doesn't run out.

Evryone?? So you know everyone who has installed a SR20 into an Escort? You are wrong. Not everyone. Don't assume. I have personally seen it done "properly" and they did not have lowered racks, spaced cross member, ect. The sump was modified and cross member and rack remained in factory positions. And as in the first pic of the steering column fouling on the engine, that cast bit is about 75mm lower than the column when a SR20 is installed "properly" into an Escort.

Ooookay. Since I don't own a Escort with a SR20 I have no clue.. rightio.[8~2]

So books, articles, advise from experts, ect on modifications, be it on the net or other, are all bullsh!t?? Rightio.

In saying all that, your engineer has approved the modifications so it must be ok.

ooookay i guess everyones entitled to there opinion, id love to see the sr sump or as you have seen it was it turned into a dry sump as possably lubrication and drainage back would be a issue ??? i do know a lot of people dropping them in and converted by others and not by me and i have only seen the sump of a c18 modded thats the 1.8 litre engine for your referance,oh 75 mm lower when istalled properly??? there is more that one way to skin a cat and there is no correct way to my knowledge on its mounting or am i missing something ????good luck with your future projects

I'm going to put my 2 cents worth in here. My SR20det setup. Rack in standard position. Cross menber is not spaced down. Manual tunnel albeit massaged. Cover made to go over shifter. Standard sump. Actually have one of those Ebay winged ones there now. All fits, sump is close around rack but no problem with circuit racing. If you lay the motor over the same as nissan dose it all fits. It is tight around the tunnel where the bell housing bolts to the motor. No problem with steering column hitting that mount sticking out. Also looks like my motor sits closer to the firewall.

sounds like its going to be a weapon man

can u get some pics of how close to the front of the bay the engine sits

and how much work is it to get the box to fit into a manual tunnel?

cheers

is that the standed escort mounts ??? and how much of a angle is the motor on 1 due to your drive line angles and 2 when you go up steep hills its angle will be a fair amount.

Hi guys I’ve had this motor in and out about a 100 times in the last 3 years and I always forget to take some pictures of the clutch fork. From memory I modded and extended the nissan one using some 25 x 3 flat bar and the end of an escort one. A pivot point is bolted to the belhousing for the arm to pivot on. I just copied an escort setup. I was a bit of mucking about but it works quite well. I didn't want to have to put in a hyd clutch at the time so I did this. Also I run a 7 1/4 inch twin plate clutch which is quite light to press. I don't know how the bell housing would go with some of the heavier clutches that some people like to use. It is quite thin where the pivot is bolted to.

As for fitting it in a manual tunnel. The bracing in my tunnel was already cut out from the sierra 5 speed. I made and fitted a 20mm short shifter kit so that moved the shifter plate up so I had to make a cover for that. Under that there are two nuts either side of the box that the tunnel will need to be widened for. About an inch down the tunnel is where it seems to be the worst. The gaps get quite small. Down to a 5mm. I did do quite a bit of massaging with a FGH around this area. With some more massaging I'm sure it could be widened. It has not been a problem so I haven't bothered. The firewall lip has been hammered down flat. If u want a perfect looking tunnel then go for an auto or custom one.
