hey boys

im noticing that there is a fuel smell around my car not sure if its that i have the wrong fuel cap
or very low fuel in it , or just coming out of the breather

i noticed there is a hose just behind the rear drivers size tire like a breather pipe seems to me its coming from there as i cant see any leaks on fuel line or tank

is there a canister that goes there of some sort
i know the breather pipe comes from tank runs up to just behind fuel nozzle then back down to that hose and out just behind the rear tire

does anybody have that fuel smell near there rear tire

I remember my first Capri had the fuel smell inside the car itself! Good thing I am a non-smoker.

Capri fuel tanks are known to sometimes weep fuel through the join. It won't necessarily be as obvious as fuel dripping out. But if your boot lid is closed and you can still smell fuel, then it may just be the breather.

Check vapor lines, filler neck, fuel cap, and tank sender seal.

ive checked nearly all i can no real fuel smell in boot or inside the car more from the breather hose just seems to be a bit strong ill try another cap if i can find one

do these capri's have a vent hole on the fuel caps ???

might see if i can fit a fuel vapour canister on it from some other car if it doesnt stop

Im betting you have a worn rubber boot seal. Lift your boot and just above your exhaust you may find it is a bit dirtier than the rest of your boot. If your car is running a little rich it will smell like fuel. Reason being, when your car breaks through the wind it causes a vacuum at the back of the car - the fumes then rush in through the gaps in the worn out rubber. There are holes in the back parcel shelf which will allow the fumes to enter the cabin - and there you have it, a cabin full of fumes !!

it doesnt smell in the cabin or boot just outside of car more from the breather pipr thay comes our next to fuel line there is a breather pipe just seem to be a bit excessive fuel smell there are no leaks  on fuel lines ,,,

could justbe wrong type fuel cap ...all i can think of is once the fuel cap is tight only place vapour can come out is that breather and having the wrong cap might not allow the vapour to come out of the cap as well as breather ..

ill be running fuel pump tomorrow abd re check again for leaks

There's no point fitting a canister.  They are temporary storage of fuel fumes that are purged by the emissions system.  If you fit one without the right carby, valves etc then it will never be purged and will just become saturated and the fumes will then come out of its vent so you're back to the same problem.

All I can think of is a blockage some where. Maybe a kink in a pipe etc. With the heat of the day quite high you have pressure building in the tank which is forcing the fumes out like leaving a fuel can in the sun. Do you always have the smell or only when it's hot outside?

I agree with Wiggy333, sounds like a blockage. Assuming there is no one-way check valve in the breather line, test that the breather is not blocked by gently blowing some air at low pressure through the breather back towards the tank with the fuel cap off.  The air should flow freely. If the breather is blocked the tank may be pressurising and pushing fumes out through the fuel cap or elsewhere.

sometimes i smell fumes at all times

i know  from top of tank where the breather line hose joins to top of tank to out under the car its not blocked its clear

ill try blowing it back up from breather to tank

unless its just low fuel maybe 6 odd ltrs in it and might be just heap of  vapour build up from low fuel

doesnt really smell near fuel cap more so from under the car where the breather pipe exits thru the boot and you smell it when passing down drivers side stick ya nose down near wheel well and its stronger cant smell it in boot or inside car

i know the hose comes out of the top of fuel tank goes to pipe that loops around a bit on fuel neck under parcel tray then back into a hose down and out along side fuel line and out under next to chassis rail

looks like garden hose was dried out so i replaced it with similar hose im going to take it off and try proper fuel hose if i can find proper 10 -12mm fuel hose
