I was having a chat yesterday to a somebody regarding how many genuine Capri GT V6 are still about.
We both had very different opinions and I wonder what you guys think?
My thoughts would be around the 1000 car mark, taking into account about 2/3's would have not survived or had V8's etc fitted.
I know of about 10 Capri V6 GT's in Tasmania if that helps, but I am sure there are a few more hidden away in Tassie sheds.
Regards

First, let's start with how many were actually assembled here in Australia from the completely knocked down kits (CKD) imported from the UK. From January, 1970 through to November, 1972, when the GT/V6 models were being assembled at Ford's Homebush plant in Sydney, there were 2,459 GT/V6 manuals and 555 GT/V6 auto's, a grand total of 3,014.

As to how many are left, I'd say that you'd be lucky to find 500, and that's probably too high a guesstimate!

Now, let the banter begin, Terry

Terry,
That ,means we had aboot 10% of the V6GT population at Wagga a  couple of years ago  - about 50 V6 cars IIRC

At Wagga in 2009 we only had 22 GT/V6s out of a total of 68 Capris! It's fair to say that, even if we could identify all the V6 Capri's in Clubs around Australia, we would probably cover less than half  the V6 Capri's left in the country anyway. It's an impossible challenge, but I'm thinking that there are far less than my original guessimate of 500 left.

FYI, here's the breakdown of the Capri's at Wagga , Easter, 2009:
Consul Capri 1, 1600 Deluxe 3, 1600 XL 1, 1600GT 6, 3000GT 22, XR2 Convertible 4, Convertible 4, Clubsprint 1, RS3100 6, Perana 1, Mk2 US 2.8i 1, Mk3 1.6S 1, Mk3 2.0S 1, Mk3 2.8i 3, Mk3 3.0 2, Modified 2-litre 4, Modified V6 4, Modified V8 2, 2000GT 1, TOTAL = 68

Glenn, I'd love to see a Capri register and am willing to help, be it an on-line register or off-line. The thing that seems to worry everyone though is revealing the full Chassis number and their rego numbers! For the life of me I have no idea why, as these are the most essential part of the register in order to help differentiate between the cars. Terry

The idea of a register would be nice but I think we all know there is someone who "claims" legal rights to that, yet won't reveal what he knows.

Care to elaborate?

I think there has been some politics floating in Capri (/Classic Ford) circles for some years.
None of which is helpful to our cause. Shame really......

I agree.

I think the most important thing is that the finer details (serial number, SIDO, engine number) should only be made public with the permission of the owner. Other information, such as serial prefix (eg, CK17ME), build date, model number, paint, trim etc is quite harmless in the public domain I think.

The information I have has either been made public (either online or public display), or the owner has made the information available to me. In all cases, I don't necessarily feel that I have the right to re-post that information, especially where the owner has given me the car details directly.

I think the best scenario would be a register available publically (website or forum), possibly similar to the old RS2000 register. There are one or two different registers that the Falcon guys do which might be worth comparing. I'd suggest the main rules could be:
  • full details of the car would only be published with the owner's permission
  • no full names and addresses would be sought (or revealed)
Information from Ford about production numbers/details would also be useful, but acknowledging the work put into compiling these by people such as yourself Terry.

Cheers

These was a guy charging $5 to be on a capri register but sent nothing back in return.
When I questioned the validity of what he was doing, he claimed he had all the right to Ford Material on Capris and if I wanted access to it I need to pay!!! I'd mention his name but he'd probably sue.

Sounds pretty poor form.

Interesting that someone could claim a legal right to such information. I would have thought it would be in the 'public interest'. Did he say how much he wanted for the info?

Cheers

Ok maybe a easier question.
How may RS3100's left?

Also it is a very interesting topic regarding how many of a specific car are left, this topic regarding XY GTHO phase 3's has been argued for many years.
Regarding a register, may be an idea for one of the Capri clubs to handle, that way they would at least get their members cars on it but there is always vehicles tucked away in storage waiting to repaired / restored plus there are many Capris owners that don't participate in forums and car clubs etc.
I have a gut feeling there would be more than 500 remaining, but only a guess with no evidence to back it up.

Also I wonder if it would be possible to get a break down of how many cars where built in specific colour and trim spec. You see this info for other Fords so again might be a project for one of the Capri Clubs out there.

Slightly off topic bit does anybody know of the 3 1970 1600 GT's that were built? Or how many original 1600 GT's are left?
And also how many of this forum users are greedy (or just twice as silly) and own more that 1 x GT V6, or more than one Capri?
