So I've had this escort p/van for about 5 years now as my first car and never really done any work on it, its lived its whole life by the ocean so the salt has gotten to it.
 
Most of it is no big problem but the last year or so the drivers door mount has just dwindled away, the door its self is fine its just about 40cm of really bad (no metal at all just all rust) part that the door where the hinges connect to the body. I think its due to the fact that the door leaks and just sits there or something.
 
So I'm not really sure what to do, either cut it out and weld in some new, or fiber glass or i really don't know thats why i though turning to the internet would hopefully help
If anyone has had a similar problem or has any ideas it would be awesome.
there are some pictures below to help get an idea cos I'm not so sure how to explain it.

Cut and weld. Pretty sure you can get those sections from the UK. Or an importer like the Ulsterman on this forum which brings containers of stuff from the UK for our Escorts.
 

hey this is a major strength point for the pillar and door must be cut and welded .....you can get replacement panels from smacka 
 

Being a MK2 Escort Van , I think the door hinges may be bolt on ! If not then knock the hinge pins out ,DO NOT CUT DOOR OFF AT HINGES OR YOU WILL BE IN ALL SORTS OF PROBLEMS.
Looking at your car, its bad but if the inner frame of the pillar which is what supports the door weight is ok then you need to cut off or away the outer skin panel of the hinge, neutralise the rust on the frame wear and welld the new outer pillar on which you can buy from SMCKA in NSW. If you are not a car worker or welder then get a new pillar and take the car to a panelbeater.
