I had a Morris 850 Mini quite a few years ago that failed because the wipers did not self park - even though they were working as designed and in 1962, mini wipers just stopped where they were when you turned off the switch.  It took a bit of talking, but on my second inspection, I convinced the workshop owner (one of his mechanics had done the original inspection) that it was ok because it was working as designed.  If I needed to change to self parking wipers, that would have meant putting a later model wiper motor in the car - not that difficult to do and certainly easier than on an Escort, but I was a lot poorer then and I was trying to get the car on the road as cheaply as possible.

My MK2 escort failed for rust on the inside lip of the boot lid, was told needed an engineers report saying its been fixed properly... took it to another joint, passed no problems.
 
Also, i had a Honda CRX (first car) failed because the boot struts wouldn't hold the rear hatch up.
