Hi, I was wondering if anyone could post a photo of a correctly installed clutch cable on a Mk1 V6. I have a new one (Burtons) ready to install to replace a slightly burnt one, however the Haynes manual I have doesn't show or describe how the cable is routed through the extractors etc. The new cable I have is longer than the one currently fitted and so should be easier to fit with enough clearance from the extractors. Could be the current cable is the wrong one, I've had the car for 35 years but can't remember if I've ever replaced it before. Any help appreciated.

Hi Timmo

I replaced mine about 2 years ago by choosing the most gentle route between chassis rail and extractors after leaving firewall. To prevent burning the cable which seems to happen to all, I fitted a zip tie very loosely to hold the Cable via the RH Brake Line in mid air equi-distant between extractors and chassis rail.
No risk to brake line is imposed here as there is insignificant pressure.
I also added a small length of heater hose to Cable to avoid chafing against steering column to box connector.
This is super-glued in position.
Before entering the Bell Housing area, I added a rubber spacer between chassis and Cable to prevent Cable from chafing against Chassis rail.
The above has performed admirably for 2 years with no problems at all.
Start by fitting Cable to Clutch Pedal, then work your way down.

Hi Timmo
I've done the same as BeeVee - cable tie away from extractors.

Thanks a lot for the info. will probably tackle the job in the next few days. Have also got a clutch fork boot to install at the same time.
Bernie, there is a picture of my car in one of my first posts on June 28th.

Just finished installing new clutch cable and clutch fork boot, which the car has never had since I've owned it.
I took the advice of Bernie and Jacekiwi in the way I routed the cable and it has worked out well, it's well away from the extractors. A couple of small issues though, the new cable (Burtons) was slightly different. The end of the outer that mounts in the firewall was slightly larger and would not fit into the fitting in the firewall, I managed to grind it down enough to fit. The new cable is the one on the left in the picture, it doesn't look larger but it is. The next thing was trying to get the pin into the fitting on the inner cable at the pedal end. As you can't really see what you're doing and it's by feel only I thought I was just not lining things up properly, however after about 5 minutes of trying I removed the cable and found that the hole in the fitting was slightly smaller than the old cable and the pin would not slide in. Once drilled out all was well. The new cable was a couple of centimetres longer, which was a help in tying it away from the exhaust. Once fitted the clutch felt so much better as unbeknown to me the old cable was binding quite badly, probably due to the distorted outer which was burnt in a couple of places. All up a successful job, even though it took a little longer than I thought it would.
