Hi Guys,

So i bought myself an RS2000 from queensland, and am in the process of driving it (yes driving it!), from queensland to melbourne.

I decided to come through canberra to stay with my cousin, only to find as i was driving that the heater doesnt work!!!. Now i dont know if anyone here has driven for 12 hours, approaching camberra at about 3am, -1 outside, with no heater..........but i can ssure you, its cold!.

So anyway, today im going to have a bit of a look at the car to see if i can find out why the heater doesnt work, and what i would really appreciate is if someone could please either post, or PM me any diagrams / photos / iunformation on how the cooling system is setup.

From what I can see (and this is from a 60 second look), the heater tap seems to have been removed, and a few new heater hoses installed, so i really need to know where the plumbing goes before i can do the repair. Im planning on leaving tomorrow morning around 5am, and id really really love to have a heater!.

Thanks very much guys.

Dave

Heater core is probably blocked. Undo the hoses at the firewall and jam a garden hose in there at full pressure. If its blocked you'll no almost instantly.

thanks for the reply spigot. I have since identified that the hoses have been disconnected from the heater core.....i suspect becuase it has been leaking.

So, ive pulled the heater box out, and have pulled the core out of the box itself.

I dont suppose anyone could help out with a heater box in canberra today?. Ir indeed know of a good wrekcer in canberra that might be open today.

I have also confirmed that i do need a heater tap, and some form of information as to how the heater plumbing goes.

Guys, if anyone can lend a hand it would be very much appareciated.

Kind Regards

Dave

Lucky he didn't do this with the heater core in the car!

Lol, I hope that's not full mains water pressure in that heater core. .....

I am under impression that there is no heater tap from factory, and its a continual flow thru the heater core.temp is controlled via flap mechanism in heater box.

Coolant flows from inlet manifold via auto choke to the heater core inlet , then from heater core outlet to the water pump.

Cheers

Heater cores are usually bypassed because they leak (and being within the car -they leak right into the footwells).... There are two types - the early Mk2 with a metal case and a later Mk2 one with a plastic case.  Being an RS2000, it should have the later plastic case.... The heater core is slightly different between, them....  If it is only blocked, you can try the garden hose, but NOT at full pressure as you will more than likely blow a weak core apart.  Try alternating between the inlet and outlet until it comes out clear...)

You second problem of a missing heater tap is much easier to fix - simple. Escort Mk2's do NOT have them... (You have obviously been playing with Jap cars recently... (RS2000 in his post is correct - they flow hot coolant through the core all the time, with air temp controlled by a flap in the heater box.) (Escort hetaer don't work really well anyway, but should give out some minor warmth after 5 mins....)

Not sure if you're still in Canberra, or if this place is still operating. But a few years back when I lived in Canberra this guy had lots of Escort bits.

There's nothing like a frosty Canberra morning in an unheated Escort to really invigorate the soul

My heater core was also leaking, hence me bypassing the unit altogether. Ive since had it out and realised that the leak is pretty minor..

Im contemplating hooking it back up and running some radiator stop leak (the tiny metal shavings stuff) through the whole coolant system. What do you guys think? It seemed to save my current 1600 radiator from a leaky death... and that was 9 months ago! Still going strong!

Nick,

Just get another radiator you know doesn't have holes.  It won;t cost much for a 2nd hand one.
